Windows Update Hangs - Windows Product Code corrupt? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased a laptop with Windows 7 professional 32 bit installed.  I was told the code would be good for Windows 7 Professional 64 bit as well.  I installed the 64 bit OS, and it never asked for the product code, and there was no "Change Product Code" link available in system properties.  I used slmgr.vbs -ipk to change the code to my code as suggested here http://tweaks.com/windows/39026/change-windows-product-key-after-install/.  Now the link to change product code is also available and I have tried re-entering my code there.  It always says the code is good and Windows is activated.  The part of the code showing in the diagnostic looks correct.

Now when I try to run Windows Update, it hangs on "searching for updates"  (This happened before I tried to change the code as well as after -- it is why I realized I needed to enter the code.)

When I run the Windows Update Diagnostic, it says:

Service registration is missing or corrupt

    Problems installing recent updates

    Problems installing recent updates

It says all 3 of those are "fixed" but Windows Update still hangs, and if I run the diagnostic again, it shows those three items again (or sometimes just a single "problems installing recent updates" and sometimes that line shows as not fixed)

    Rebooting doesn't help.

    Thanks in advance!
