OneCare Backup of Folders RRS feed

  • Question

  • I need to backup specific folders (not just file types).  Is this possible and if so how?

  • No.

The concept of backup (and the implementation) is that you select files by type (category) and all valid locations are scanned for files to backup. You can then exclude a folder or file from being backed up, but unless the file type is in the list selected, you can't back it up.

A possible solution, unless you are trying to backup a non-allowed file type, is to select *all* file types for backup, including Other. The exclude *all* folders on the PC except the ones you actually want to backup.

Many thanks for the reply.  I will think about the work-around you suggest.  But it seems that OneCare is not designed to support the way I work (organising my projects by folders and not by file type).

I was giving OneCare a tryout to solve my security and back-up needs and I guess I will have to look at other solutions.

    Again, many thanks.

  • You're welcome, Tony.

I'm not a fan of Norton products, but others have reported that 360 has more flexibility for backup if you want a single suite for security and backup.

Personally, if OneCare was to be your only backup solution, I'd consider using SyncToy (free power toy from Microsoft) - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e0fc1154-c975-4814-9649-cce41af06eb7&DisplayLang=en

and configuring it to clone your project folder tree to an external drive or network location. You can run it manually as desired or you can set it to run in Windows Scheduled tasks. I use SyncToy extensively.

That way your projects get backed up and your other files that are scattered about can be handled by OneCare by type - Mail, Documents, Pictures, etc.
