Reinstallation Issue

Question

Ok,
I could not get the backup service to work on my server yesterday. So today I decided to try reinstall WHS. Went great until I got to the text portion of the install. I getFile \x86\NT5\viamraid.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 2335 in d:\nt\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c.
This is with the "official Server 2003 driver" for my SATA card. I figured I'd just switch to the XP driver and it would be fine. However I get the same error if I try to specify the drive in text setup and in the GUI setup I no longer have the option to reinstall. I can only choose new installation. Is my data gone? Most of it I don't care about, but I do care about my TiVo shows since I don't have cable at home.................Sunday, November 16, 2008 5:12 PM

If a Server Reinsatallation fails, you probably will not get another chance to re-install until you completely wipe the partition that contains the failed OS installation (the one that is 20 GB). The best way to do that is to remove the primary drive from the server and connect it to another PC, then format the 20 GB partition. Once you do that, put the drive back in the server. At that point, you should get the Server Reinstallation option again.Sunday, November 16, 2008 5:26 PMModerator -

Hello, not sure what caused the driver to fail - maybe the card is no longer fitted properly in the slot or the SATA cable or disk power cable is not fixed well? Or one of the disks is broken causing the driver ticking out.
If your machine is no longer offering a reinstallation, this may have to do with not recognized drives due to the driver crash.
So if you could solve this situation the chances are good, to be able to reinstall again.
In case this won't work, disconnect all data disks and pull off the system disk. Attach the system disk to another PC and check the DATA partition. There is a hidden folder DE\shares (you have to toggle Show hidden files and folders in Explorer options to see it). While that subfolder ideally is empty in a multi disk server, it could still contain duplicated or non duplicated folders. Copy those to another location before trying a new install on this disk (or get another drive to do so).
After completing setup including Windows Updates for the server to get Power Pack 1 installed attach the disks, login to Remote Desktop and go to the DE\shares folder in Windows Explorer (again enable the Explorer option.).
Copy the content of the subfolders to the new installed servers storage using the shortcut Shared Folders on Server.
After finshing to copy the files from one disk you can add that disk to the storage pool again, so if you cannot distinguish between the disks it is recommended to attach only one by one.
(Client backups are lost in this scenario, although there is also a way to get them transferred from the disks manually with some luck and enough free storage.)

I'm not familiar with that app, but any program that will completely remove all traces of the failed OS install should do the trick.Sunday, November 16, 2008 5:38 PMModerator -

I just formatted the system partition as NTFS using GParted (great freeware partition manager app), so I'm crossing my fingers.Sunday, November 16, 2008 5:48 PM -
Both methods were a no go. And when I tried to pull the files off the primary data drive in Vista, it said cannot read from disk, corruption issue. I guess that means I will loose all my movies, TiVo shows (250GB+ of those) and the entire series of Road Runner and While Coyote :(Sunday, November 16, 2008 6:26 PM

You should be able to connect that drive to another PC and pull the data from the hidden DE folder (as Olaf said). Are you sure you were looking at the right location? Looking at the normal folder called shares will not work (the files there are only "tombstones", not actual files). Also, you might try running chkdsk /r on that drive to see if there are any errors.Sunday, November 16, 2008 6:30 PMModerator -

it wouldn't let me actually view anything on the drive that shows up as D: in WHS :(Sunday, November 16, 2008 7:29 PM -

this would also explain, that a server reinstall was not offered. (Had the same situation some time ago, that the partition D: was not readable any more by the WHS.
Do you have a spare disk, which you can put into the same position and try, if the driver loads then?
And the most of the data still should be on the other data disks.

Did you get an "Access Denied" error? If so, it's probably because you need to take ownership of those folders and files.Monday, November 17, 2008 1:37 AMModerator
