data- HTML5 attribute using bind unfriendly to IDE

    Question

  • Hello,

    For some reason, anytime I try to add a data- attribute as: data-bind in ASP.NET (.aspx) WebForms, I get a syntax error (unterminated string),  like this:

    <div>
        <span data-bind="value: '<%: String.Empty %>'"></span>
    </div>

    I can add any other word after data except for "bind".  Can someone please explain what might be going on here?  This happens in VS2010, VS2012, and 2013 for web.

    ***EDIT***
    I forgot to add, when you cut/copy this line of code it adds 4 spaces between %> and the apostrophe (').  Not sure what the IDE is trying to tell me.

    Thank you

    -Dan
