SSRS Data Connector on named instance - The report cannot be displayed. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,
I've installed CRM 4.0 but I can't get the reports to work. The error message is:
    Reporting Error.
    The report cannot be displayed.

The database is on a separate SQL server, on a named instance (crm4). I've also installed SSRS connector on this named instance. And I did edit the config file before installing, although I didn't run it from command line (didn't know how to) - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947060.

When I open reportserver and open folder 4.0 and then MSCRM_DataSource properties, I'm not able to select Connection Type: Microsoft CRM Data Extension. I believe that means there is something wrong with the SSRS Data Connector....

I've also looked up Registry, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/software/microsoft/mscrm. When I first looked it up CRM_SrsDataConnector_ReportServerInstance said MSSQLSERVER, and not my named instance (CRM4). I changed that, but it did not help.

Has anyone any experience close to my scenario? If so, I'll be pleased to hear from you.

    Thanks!

  • Hi trondd,

We were using a copy of the SRS Data Connector files on the local machine.

    I installed again using the:

    1.  original SRS Data Connector files from MS, and
    2.  manually amending the install-config.xml files using method 2 in the MS KB - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947060/en-us.

After a reboot, the Microsoft CRM Data Extension appeared in the Connection Type field in MSCRM_DataSource on the Report Server.

Why this should work when the original install-config.xml we were using contained the same, correct data, I don't know!

    Thank you for your reply.

  • did you modify the config file because you received an error message when you tried to install the SRSS Connector from the Installation CD?  I would try installing the SRSS Connector directly from the installation CD.

When you open the report server, the data source usually used for reports is a shared datasource.  Can you run a report from the Report Server rather than CRM.  If not, what error do you receive?

Also, go to the Deployment Manager and ensure you have the correct settings for your deployment.

It sounds to me like something didn't install correctly and you may spend quite a bit of time trying to identify all the parts and pieces that you have to modify to make things work as expected.  If possible, I would probably uninstall the application and start over or try a repair on the server.

  • Thanks for your reply Donna!

I modified the config file because I installed the Connector on a named instance on the SQL Server. Then you need to modify it (check MS URL above).

Yes, I am able to open the reports on the report server. In the event log it says authentication failed.

I'm almost 100% sure the CRM server is fine, and that something's wrong with the SSRS Data Connector. That because I can't find Microsoft CRM Data Extension in the Connection Type field in MSCRM_DataSource on the Report Server.

Has anyone else had luck modifying the install config file for SSRS Connector?

  • Hi trond,

Did you ever resolve this issue?

After upgrading the SQL server from 2005 to 2008 we are experiencing the same problem - CRM 4 works perfectly, the Reporting server works, but the SRS Data Connector doesn't seem to install properly, as per your experience:

"That because I can't find Microsoft CRM Data Extension in the Connection Type field in MSCRM_DataSource on the Report Server."

    Thanks

  • Hi Ed,

That's some time ago now, and I'm not 100% sure what I did to fix it but I solved the issue.
Have you updated the data connector with the latest update rollup?
