Windows Vista Validation Problem RRS feed

  • I received a pop up indicating that my install of Vista is invalid.  I also cannot update MS Security Essentials, though I have been using it on my 3 year old HP desktop since the software was released without a hitch.

  • Solved with help of HP Support.

    I was told to re-enter product code from sticker on case.  After making sure that the validation service was running, this worked.

    Would still be interested to know why this happened in the first instance.

  •   From your Diagnostic Report, the cause of the non-genuine issue was that one of Vista's protected system files had been modified in some way (replaced or had become corrupt):

      It is unlikely that re-entering the Product Key would make a modified file, no longer modified.  My assumption is that HP Support tried a number of things (one of which repaired the damaged file). But since it can take up to 2 reboots for Vista to reset after being Non-Genuine, re-entering the Product Key just happened to be the last thing that was tried before the 2nd reboot.

      As to how this file becamed modified, I don't know. Could have been anything from random file corruption to a Malware infection to an error on the disk of the physical hard drive.
