AHCI - Performance or other advantages RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have WHS running on a GA-MA69GM-S2H with 2 add on PCI Sil3114 4 port sata controllers. The mobo is set to AHCI at the moment. I assume that the two add-in PCI controllers are not running AHCI, but I am not sure how to tell.

I have noticed that some of the add-ins give me more disk info, such as temps, when the mobo is set to IDE.

I know that AHCI allows hot swapping and NCQ but I am wondering if there are any real advantages in terms of performance? If not I will just set the board to run IDE mode

  • There is no significant advantage, in the WHS environment, to using AHCI mode for SATA controllers that support it. Hard drives aren't fast enough (yet) to saturate the PATA bus, and while AHCI will offer slightly better theoretical throughput due to it's advanced features there are other factors that will prevent you seeing that in the real world.

OTOH, if it's working with AHCI turned on, don't bother turning it off; there's also no advantage to PATA. Smile
