Stop surfing, make friends, IITians told RRS feed

  • Question

  • IIT Mumbai has restricted Internet access in hostels, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students' performance, making them reclusive and even suicidal.

Authorities at the elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socialising and many were late for morning classes or slept through them.

Student anger has also spilled on to several blogs run by IIT alumni where bloggers say, "the birth of the virtual world had led to the death of the real selves," but add that they resent regulation of students' activities.

----hey! these were some extracts from an article and I think its a very valid point in our lives too. I too believe that this always online phenomena has converted our "LIVE" activities to "ONLINE" activities.

What is the general feeling about the same? obviously at first each of us will not like the idea of restriction but then it might be given a serious thought.

  • oh , I forgot to mention, the net would not be completely banned. Students are restricted only for some specific hours so that they are not completely addicted to the net.

  • yeah, if one is learning something then its fine. But people get addicted for the sake of it. No. of sites like orkut etc. create addictive sentiments.
