disapearing program?

Question

Is there some way to load Onecare directly from the CD?
It tries to download from the website but disconnects after two or more hours and doesn't finish.
I believe it stopped working some five months ago when it got an error message shortly after installation.
I also can't find the message any more, in fact I can't find any trace of onecare on the PC...
Very frustrating to say the least.

Unfortunately, OneCare requires an active Internet connection to install even if you use a retail CD. The CD installation will go to the OneCare servers to download the latest bits, which will be pretty much the entire program as it is updated frequently.
Over dial-up, the installation can take 2 to 3 hours on a decent speed connection. If you have an excellent connection, close to 56K, it can be less than 2 hours. If your dial-up connection is very slow, over 2 or 3 hours is not unheard of.
If you did not uninstall OneCare before trying to install again, it will fail, but that should happen quite early in the process when it does the pre-install check.
Open Control Panel, click on Add/Remove Programs and you should see Windows Live OneCare in the list of installed programs. If not, perhaps a System Restore was performed to put the PC to a time before OneCare was installed - it should not disappear completely. In fact, I've never heard of such a thing.
The fact that OneCare disappeared is disconcerting, so I think it would be wise to contact support.

Thanx for the reply.
It's a little frustrating when you pay $200 for a program then find out you can't use it!
We constantly loose our internet connection, mainly because the PC keeps rejecting every modem we've tried, both internal and external.
To be honest, we find this whole Vista thing is frustrating to use. For myself, I went back to using the old PC we were throwing out which still has Windows 95, it's slow but just won't quit.
I'll give this a few more tries before I get my gun out...

I'm sorry that you're frustrated by Vista and your dial-up connection. You might want to check with your ISP or the PC or modem manufacturer to make sure that you have your dial-up settings for your modem optimally configured.
I don't know where you are located, because $200 is not the US retail price for a copy of OneCare, but if you need to forget about OneCare and go with an alternate solution, in North America, you can obtain a refund for a retail purchase -
