CRC Check On File: How To Recover ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hopefully I have the right forum.   This question is about the version of WHS that formats it's discs NTFS so they can be read on other platforms after being removed from WHS' array.

The problem is that WHS is throwing "Network At Risk" and the Details dialog identifies two files that appear to be corrupted to the point where accessing them cause CRC errors.     The exact verbage is "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)".

Coincidentally,  Windows Home Server Console | Server Storage just keeps "Calculating sizes..." forever..... and I am guessing that's related to the CRCs.

Short of entirely wiping the array and reloading 10 TB of data, can anybody suggest an approach to fixing this?

Just trying to Delete the files does not work - because of the CRC errors.

All shares have Duplication = On, so my first though is to find out which drive the offending files are on and either "Remove" it and add a new drive or just yank it as if it had failed in service and let WHS take up the slack...and then add another drive.

    Suggestions ?

  • Hi,

According to your description, my undertanding is that WHS prompts error "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)", and Server Storage on Server Console keeps state of "Calculating sizes...".

Please check your Hard Disk for errors:
Open CMD and type "chkdsk /f" end with ENTER.

    Best Regards,

I am posting this reply for the benefit of anybody else that may find themselves in this situation.

The above command - as written - will only schedule CHKDSK for the System drive (C:) (or whatever drive the Command Line window is pointing to at the moment).

I did that and it did do a CHKDSK /F on C: when rebooted - since C: is the system drive and CHKDSK cannot be run against it while the system is running.

But, since this is Windows Home Server, the data resides in multiple drives (8 of them in this case) - and not on the System drive.

I take it then, that the real action is to CHKDSK /F  /X  each of the 8 "Data" drives - and I am doing that right now.

The "Data" drives do not require queing CHKDSK /F pending reboot.    Instead, WHS offers to dismount the drive and perform the operation immediately.   The/X parameter prevents the prompt to dismount and just dismounts the volume right away.

Will report back on the results - although I would note that the scheduled CHKDSKs do not leave anything behind.  i.e. the screen comes up, it does it's thing,  but there does not seem to be any persistent log from which somebody could identify problems in the event that /F does not remedy the situation.

  • CHKDSK does not seem to help.

One extra aspect to the problem is that the bad sectors seem to be on volume D:, which is a partition that WHS created on the System drive.... so just removing/replacing the physical drive does not seem to be an option.

I did five iterations of CHKDSK, the last one with the /R and /X options in addition to /F.

Can  anybody suggest a way to get rid of the CRC-files?

Understood that uninstalling WHS, replacing the System drive, and re-loading all 10 TB of data is one option... but one I would rather avoid because of the days-upon-days it will take to load the data.

Some way to remove that D: partition form WHS's array?    I can "Remove" an entire physical drive.... maybe there is a way to "Remove" just a partition...??

FWIW, here's the output of all those CHKDSK runs:
