Not Genuine Popup - 0x8004FE21 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows 7 Home Premium OEM on a Acer Laptop just started to popup 'not genuine' when I resolve it takes me to a UK website and says please buy a copy of the software...

I have been using CCcleaner which I now feel causes this problem

Did some online checking, one thing I did notice was the license key was not the same as the sticker on the bottom of my laptop. I changed this using a how to online, and it seemed to take, was validated fine. But I still get the popup...

Any help would be appreciated, also any idea how long until my machine stops working...

    Here is my MGAdiag readout:

  • That looks fine -

This one was me, playing with the system to try and break it :)

I knew that a corrupted CATROOT2 folder caused problems with Windows Updates, so wanted to see what it did to an MGADiag report - it's actually a lot less common a cause than the IRST drivers, which is why we go for those first.

    Good luck!

  • it is never a good idea to use registry cleaners.

The common cause for these mismatches is a faulty Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver

Download and install the latest version from....

     http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

then run another MGADiag report and post the results.

  • CCLeaner of itself does not cause this problem - however, as George says, Registry Cleaners as a class should ALWAYS be avoided. They are without exception designed more to produce nice statistics, than to do your system any good.

Please do yourself and your PC a favour and switch off the registry-scanning capabilities of CCleaner, and leave Windows to look after the registry itself.

I agree with George's analysis of your problem - please post back with details and a new MGADiag report, whatever the result of installation.

  • my machine is AMD

  • PLease try installing the drivers anyhow - they may still install, as it depends on the actualchipset in use, rather than the CPU.

  • I read the readme and it doesn't apply to my laptop, it has AMD SATA drivers.

This problem is beyond annoying, I have called tech support, reported to counterfeit, read pages and pages on forums. And why? my legally purchased Acer Laptop with OEM supplied OS is flagging as not genuine. This IMO this is a microsoft f'up, something changed with the last windows update that I was blessed with receiving. I have better things to do with my time and love having the response from support being for me to purchase a new copy and wipe my computer and reinstall. Really?

I appreciate the assistance but this is really frustrating, there is no choice but to use microsoft, if and when there is I foresee them crashing to the ground.

  • If you can't or won't follow directions, we can't help.

    try this.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32 folder. find the Catroot2 folder there, and right-click on it - select Properties.

In the General tab, clear the box beside 'Read-only (Only.....' by clicking in it until it's empty (it cycles around three values)

    Click Apply.

Accept any warnings that come up - if you get a 'Ignore/Ignore All/Try again' option, pick 'Ignore all'

Once complete (may be almost instantaneous),

reboot, and run another MGADiag report.

  • OK - we'll have to try the more surgical approach then.

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC

    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD

    NET START CRYPTSVC

Wait 10 minutes, then reboot twice - post another MGADiag report.

  • Just installed all the latest updates, rebooted and did the MGADiag report.

    All clear and good.

Thanks Noel, much appreciated. Not sure why MS cant figure this out instead of cause such a headache.

    Cheers.

    Good luck!
