Windows Home Server can't backup after restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • I had a hard drive failure. Placed a new one and restored it with windows home server.

Now when I try to backup every day he says: "A backup is starting"... and after that he says: cannot create snapshot of the hard drive, and he told me to try the chkdsk /r /f on every drive. Did that, but doesn't work. What can I do?

First, you don't need /f.  Just use chkdsk /r for the command.

When you say chkdsk "doesn't work", do you mean the chkdsk runs and doesn't find any errors or do you mean chkdsk doesn't run at all?  If it's not running at all, are you getting an error message?  If so, exactly what does it say?

  • Are you running any virus scanners, firewalls, backup or imaging software? You could try disabling or uninstalling those

  • Try running chkdsk /r on each drive/partition in the client machine that's not backing up. Also, try reconfiguring backups (using the wizard in the console) for that client machine.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
