Photo Folder Empty

Question
-
I have a issue with my files either being deleted or moved due to Perfect Disk 11 for WHS, all my files (photos) are missing from my shared photo folder, I remoted into the server to check the application logs and could see the program had completed a Duplication File deletion pass, 3888 files deleted. All the folders are still present in the photo folder, but they are all empty, when I corrispond the date and time when it says the folders were modified, it matches the application log exactly. The Photo folder did have duplication on. When I open my D:\Shares \Photos there are thumb.db files (only one in each folder), there which I guess would be the duplictae files or tombstones. What is the best way to restore the files back or is it too late. I am kind of beside myself as these were all my photos and my own fault that I did not have them backed up. I did contact the software manu. and they are not being too helpfull only telling me to get a file restore program, which I will if I have too but I need to know the best way to do this.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Well after a much hard fought battle trying to recover the deleted files, I have had some success, failure and lesson learned. Some of the files I did recover were corupted, some were restored back just fine, and others appear to still be missing, lesson here; Back Up, then Back up and BACK UP!! all important files! The nice feature with Vail is it has a feature built in to back up all your shares and clients, which I have been testing and will likley switch over too when it is formaly released.

Unfortunately, this isn't an issue with Windows Home Server per se.
You've already contacted Raxco, the software vendor, and they've recommended a course of action. Before you go to that length though, log on to your server's desktop and see what you can find in C:\FS\xxx\DE\Shares\yyy (replacing xxx with one of the folders you'll find in C:\FS and yyy with the name of a share). You may find your missing photos there; if so you could connect an external drive to your server, copy the photos to the external drive, and then copy them back to the server shares via (on the server) \\localhost\yyy.
If the files aren't in C:\FS\etc. then you'll need to pull the disks from your server one at a time and (on another computer) try some sort of data recovery software. I'll warn you now that you may lose a significant amount of data, as the whole idea behind disk defragmentation utilities is to move data around, thus overwriting lots of "unused" disk space, to improve performance. ("May have already lost" is probably more correct, as any overwriting of files will already have happened.) As for what data recovery software you should use, there are lots of options; I don't have specific recommendations, but would in general choose something in the middle of the price range. (Really inexpensive software may not do the job, and really expensive software will either be overpriced or have a ton of features you'll never use.)
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)Monday, November 15, 2010 6:15 PMModerator -
I searched all folders and come up with out any shares of the jpeg files, when you say middle of the price range for a file restore program http://www.pcrecovery.com/file-restore/quick-start-guide is this one in that middle range or towards the higher end.

As I said, I have no recommendations on data recovery software. I don't use it; Keeping backups, rotating those backup off site, etc. allow me to protect my data.

Lunker 1,
The best I have used has been R-Studio. As a test when I first used it I have started formatting then abort, then full format, and basically thrashed my drives to see how well R-Studio has handled weird and practical use and out of thousands of different types of files I have, it has given me 99.9% recovery. I have been using it since the very early days of Win 2000 Pro in mid 2000 had have been nothing short of happy with it. Although backing up your files is really the best idea, this on the other hand is a very indispensable tool MUST HAVE. The Perfect Disk 11 software that you have I have never used it before and the only one I have used has been Diskeeper which I purchased in 2003 "I think". I have tested both using and not using defrag and I haven't seen to much difference between using it and / or not using defrag tools. I have never used anything on any of my servers (2000, 2003, WHS) and yet to have any performance issues. One note to remember when using R-Studio connect the drive to your desktop or external case and then use it.

Good Luck
