  • I cannot get updates from update.microsoft.com. I don't get the activex control showing for Windows Genuine Advantage validation and the alternative validation method hangs on 'checking  - Windows validation ActiveX loaded'. How can I move forward? I got this working once with some MS help (can't remember how) and downloaded a ton of updates but it only worked for the one set of updates and I haven't been able to get updates since.

    The good news is Windows Professional XP and Office Professional 2007 is genuine.

    However Office Project Professional 2003 and Office OneNote 2003 have been blocked by Microsoft.

    This posting will be

     

    To manually install ActiveX please go through the following:

     

    1.      Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    2.      Type in “iexplore http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=39204” then click ‘OK’. You will be prompted to download “LegitCheckControl.cab”.

    3.      Choose Open. Once this completes, a window will open showing two files, LegitCheckControl.dll and LegitCheckControl.inf. Leave this window open for now.

    4.      Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    5.      Type in “system32”, then click ‘OK’. (If you are running Windows XP, you may need to click “show files” to allow access to this system directory.)

    6.      Drag the LegitCheckControl.dll file from the window that was open into the system32 directory. If you are prompted to overwrite a file, choose ‘Yes’ to overwrite any existing file. (If you are running Vista, you may be prompted to provide administrator permission to complete the action. If so, press “Continue” and allow it.)

    7.      Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    8.      Type “regsvr32 LegitCheckControl.dll”, and then click ‘OK’.

    9.      You should see a dialog saying “DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckControl.dll succeeded.”

    After you finish the above steps please restart the computer and try to validate Windows again: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine. Please locate the “Validate Windows” button in the upper right hand corner. Double click on the button and follow the guidance. Were you able to pass Windows Validation successfully?

  • Hi Lori,

    I have tried these steps before (but I tried them again)

     

    I already have LegitCheckControl.dll installed, I keep overwriting it with the same file.

    When I try Windows Genuine Advantage Validation, I just get the screen I am pasting in here. There is no info bar asking me to accept the Activex download. That would be OK if I could validate, but I can't. I try the alternate method which takes me to the download for Legitcheck.hda.

    I then get

     

    Validation Not Completed: ActiveX Error

    There are several reasons why validation may not have succeeded.

    • The Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool requires the user account to have administrative privileges on the computer.
    • The Microsoft Genuine Advantage Tool requires access and is unable to communicate with the Microsoft validation servers. Please click here to learn more about troubleshooting your antivirus, antispyware, Internet Explorer and firewall settings.

     Then when I go to troubleshooting, I start diagnostics and it hangs forever on

     

      Checking             Windows validation ActiveX loaded

     


    So ... it doesn't apprear to be recognising that I have the Ativex installed, and I can;t move forward.

    Please make sure that you have administrative rights into the user account you are logging into

    and also make sure that you are connected to the network. 

     

    We have attempted all the steps to resolve this issue that could have been caused by the WGA program not functioning properly and I believe this is not the issue with your validation. Have you gone to the diagnostic website for validation?  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

     

    It sounds like you have multiple issues that may be causing problems with your validation attempts, such as IE is either corrupted or not properly configured, and/or you may be having connectivity issues that is preventing your computer to be able to fully communicate with the Microsoft servers which may be caused by a router/firewall/antispyware program.

  • Hi yes I have admin rights and I am connected to the network.

    I have reinstalled IE7 just in case there was a problem there - still no joy.

    How can I investigate issues caused by firewall etc? I don't think I have anything running except Symantec Antivirus.

    Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Forum.  The purpose of this forum is the support of Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program.  Your question is off topic as well as outside my area of knowledge. 

     

    I did however, find a thread which you can refer to if all else fails with the active x error message.  (Also be sure that the active x is enabled as well).  It is possible that your user account may be corrupt and logging onto a new user account may fix the issue.  Please see this forum posting regarding this: http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/showpost.aspx?postid=905466&siteid=25&sb=0&d=1&at=7&ft=11&tf=0&pageid=0  Here is the website for how to create a new user account: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151 Be sure to read the notes on email messages and address book before proceeding.
