Old laptop died ( ran Vista 32 bit) . Got a new laptop (also running Vista) How do I delete old lap top registration with one care and register new laptop in its place and then restore the backup data files from the old lap top to the new laptop. I think the old laptop disk is still good. thanksSunday, June 7, 2009 2:33 AM

You can install One Care on the new laptop, make it a hub computer then remove the old laptop from your One Care Circle. If your backups are stored on the hard drive of the old computer recovering your data will be difficult and is exactly why backup to an internal drive is not supported. If the drive on the old computer has not failed you will need a laptop hard drive to USB adapter before you can begin the restore process - http://www.bing.com/search?q=notebook+hard+drive+to+usb+adapter&mkt=en-us&FORM=IE8SRC

I'm sorry I misunderstood your original post. If the backups are on an external drive you do not the hard drive to USB adapter. Just configure backup on the new laptop using the USB drive as the backup destination, perform a backup of the laptop, then select "restore files" and when prompted for which files to restore select " Files from another PC", then browse to the backup you want to use to restore files from.

I will add that if the external drive was attached to another PC that *is* the hub PC, then it must remain attached to the caomputer to perform the restore. You can't move the drive to the new PC and restore from it attached simply as an external drive since it was a Centralized backup device.
