Love OneCare - Lost Equipt RRS feed

  • Question

  • I guess today is the day that Equipt goes bye bye. I have my new copy of Office and my refund already. But what am I to do about antivirus? I love the low key easy use One Care. Is it worth buying a copy? I am just so torn, will it be as good if it is being done away with? I hate that they did this to us! Please somebody give me some guidence. I have too much good stuff on my computer to lose it to a dumb virus! Should I just switch to a new antivirus? And what are the best reasonable ones? I really don't want to do Macafee or Norton as they are so in your face annoying. Help.

  • You can purchase OneCare and activate a new subscription. If you purchase during activation with a credit card it will be full retail price for 1 year. If you look for a retail copy, you can save some money.
OneCare is also going away. If you purchase a subscription now, it will be fully supported through the end of your subscription. Later this year, a new antimalware program (no firewall, backupm tuneup, etc, - just antivirus and antispyware) will be available from Microsoft for free. You can switch to that after your OneCare subscription ends or any time before.
If you wish to go free, I have been satisfied with Avast for many years. It is free for Home Users and doesn't use a lot of resources.

  • The weird thing is, everything still seems to still be working today. Will it take a few days for Equipt to quit working on my machine?

  • I don't know about Equipt, but OneCare has a grace period before it is disabled after expiration.

  • The discontinuation of Equipt is actually a bit different, since it's not actually expiring, but rather being 'ended' on an arbitrary date of April 30th, 2009 by Microsoft.

    http://www.microsoft.com/equipt/default.aspx

Though the sales of Equipt have already ended and the product itself has just ended support, there's really nothing on the PC itself that has changed.  The issue will be how the Equipt backend servers are instructed to deal with the changes, or even if they are.

If the servers are just left alone, then the subscriptions might continue until they would normally expire.  If they are changed to force the expiration of all subscriptions, then the epiration status may change abruptly for everyone, which is the way the announcement makes it sound.  However, if they simply shutdown the backend servers then the the situation is even more unclear, since at some point the copies of Equipt will become confused by this and begin to complain.

I suspect they may have decided to provide a short 'grace period' after the official April 30th date to allow last minute copies of the free replacement Office Home & Student to reach the last few customers, though this is just speculation on my part.  Though I do expect that at some point they may expire all copies of Equipt on purpose to notify those users who may not have received the announcement via email.
