    Let sms die.  sms is replaced entirely by XMPP on smart phone.  I have a smartphone and only instant text with XMPP with OTR, else email.

    I am outraged that microsoft is so out of step with communication realities so as to "require" sms to confirm a new hotmail account.  I block sms.  It is imbecilic to pay additional fees on a smart phone -- required data -- to communicate in text.  Help the luddites transition from sms to XMPP with sms_transport (a feature of XMPP).
