Is my copy of Windows 7 Ultimate genuine ?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Bought a copy of Windows 7 Ultiimate in August 2010, in readiness for a new build computer. Finally installed Windows7 around September/October 2010, and today I have the black screen of death and "Windows 7 Build 7600 This copy of Windows is not genuine" message, bottom right of screen.

The software came in a black outer box which had a rounded corner top right, and the plastic case inside slid out from the top. The box was fully sealed so had no reason to believe it was not genuine.  I have tried to re-activate online but get the message "The product key used to activate Windows on your PC is already in use on another PC or has been blocked by Microsoft".

Anyway, after reading through the forum I downloaded the MGAD tool and here is the result:

Unfortunately, the Windows 7 Ultimate product key was sold illegally and belonged to a MSDN Subscription.  Contact the seller and demand a refund!  In the future, purchase Microsoft software only from a reliable, trusted and proven source, such as the Microsoft Store.

You can - but a reformat/reinstall is recommended because you cannot be sure that there was no malware hidden on the disk you've already used.
I do not recommend getting the 'Get Genuine' kit, because although it is a Retail license - entitling you to direct support from MS - it is locked to the affected PC by a supplementary license, and cannot be moved, even if that PC dies 5 minutes after completing activation. Its price is usually set at just below the minimum market price for the version on the open market - so the savings aren't that great anyhow.
If you purchase a new full Retail license for Win 7 Ultimate from a reputable store, you can use the Change Product Key option in System Properties to change the Key to the new one, and activate by internet (usually).
