Printers Lose Sharing RRS feed

  • Question

  • Folks,

A client has a small XP network.  "Server" is XP Pro, SP3.  Clients are XP Home, SP3.  Two printers are connected directly to the network (HP4050 at ip and Dell3110 at ip  One XP Home has attched HP printer via USB.

All computers are using latest version of OneCare.  All machines use centalized backup to a 250G Maxtor USB drive on the "server".

We have some legacy programs which use DOS ( LPT1: ) printing (ie a few hundred old MultiPlan spread sheets and some old FoxPro 2.6 programs.)

Windows printing always works well, no problems.

To enable DOS ( LPT1: ) printing I have to make the printers "Shared" with share names  "HP4050" and "DELL3110".  I then run:

    net use LPT1: \\SERVER14\HP4050 /persistent:yes

This has worked fine until the last week or so.  It appears that if a computer is restarted for any reason, "Shared" gets turned off, the share name is blanked and the "net use" fails.

Is it possible the OneCare is involved with this issue or is it something else?

    Thanks for your help...
