WHS backs up OK, but won't restore RRS feed

  • Question

  • Guys,
before I start messing around the Registry, can anyone please confirm that I have the same problem which relates to the Microsoft workaround. Particularly as its the same administrator (me!)  installing the Connectors software.

When I go to retrieve a file from the backup, I am offered a choice of drives (WHS then opens a window in "Opening Backup" with a progress bar stating "opening backup: (3% complete)".

That's where everything stops. I end up with "Open Backup" error message "Cannot connect to the backup service on the server. Verify that all services are running."

The Microsoft Windows Home Server Troubleshooter report no problems apart from "Cannot connect to the server internal Web site (simple page)"

I've installed the Windows Home Server Toolkit on the server and can confirm that the IIS and website is OK. RDP & firewall is OK as well.  And I simply turned off the Trend Internet security firewall and turned on the windows firewall on the only client machine (Windows XP home) on the network.

All the ports as listed in the "windows home server connected troubleshooting document" on both the client and server have been listed as exceptions.

I can copy, paste, and transfer files OK (subject to user privileges) ,
I can play media files stored on the server using the local media player,
I can back up TO the windows home server OK

Can anyone suggest what the next step is plese? I've spent a couple of weeks trying to sort out

    Windows home server is installed on a homebrew system consisting of Gigabyte GA-G33-DS3R , Dual Core E2160 CPU, 2 x 1GB Corsair PC-5300 DDR2, Western Digital 500 GB WD5000AAKS & 250 GB WD2500YS, ASUS DRW-2014L1T

  • I have only been able to see the backup files when I logon to the same id that the connector software was installed on the same computer .  I tried some suggestions found on the web to get access through other admin accounts but they didn't seem to work for me.  I found this link, it might be an XP issue.

  • Probably you already tried this, but for completeness:

    - Have tried opening the backup on another client?

    - Can you open backups from another client?

    - Reinstall connector from \\server\software\Home Server Connector Software ?

  • thanks very much for the suggestions.

Unfortunately we only have a choice of one client. It looks like poking around in the registry might be the current option, and I'll try the reinstall/install option this weekend if it doesn't work.

    Cheers,

  • YES!!

Three weeks after the windows home server was installed, I can confirm being able to retrieve a file from a back up!

I can confirm that the registry change combined with the uninstall/reinstall of windows home server connector software did the trick.

Thank you very much for the suggestions guys
