Backup of TrueCrypt encrypted Volumes? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can I backup any TrueCrypt encrypted volumes/partitions to the new WHS 2011? I was able to backup the TrueCrypt encrypted system partition of a Window 7 client with the old WHS, but only the system partition, the connector did not see any other encrypted drives and partitions, regardless of their mounting options (mount at boot, ...). In that case I was not encrypting the whole drive, because of a Linux system installed on it.

I think, THAT would compensate for the loss of the drive extender.

  • After installing WHS 2011 in a virtual machine, I was able to do some tests with Truecrypt- and Bitlocker-encrypted clients. WHS 2011 could backup (non-system) Bitlocker volumes, but failed to detect Truecrypt volumes.

Maybe Bitlocker is using inofficial APIs, thus gaining an at least unfair advantage over a competitor? It would not be the first time this happend...
