Says not genuine windows 7 after hard drive replacement RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just replaced my hard drives on an old Dell XPS400 (with a RAID 1 array).  The computer is working fine however I now get a "not genuine" error message for Windows 7 Professional.  Any help resolving this issue would be appreciated - I do have the original disc/license key I purchased when I upgraded the computer from XP to Win 7 earlier this year.  Here is the MGADiag report:

  • Please download and install the latest Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (Intel® RST) RAID Driver.  Afterward, restart your PC two (2) times, then run a new MGA and post the results here.  Thank you!

  • Unfortunately that driver is not compatible with my system - I have Intel ICH7R/DH SATA RAID Controller v8.9.0.1023 installed and can't seem to find a later version on Intel's web site.

  • Ok, I was able to find what looks to be a more recent driver.  (I can't seem to post the link but it's here:  www.driverscape.com/download/intel(r)-82801g-(ich7-family)-ultra-ata-storage-controllers---27df)  I have rebooted twice.  My latest diagnostic reads as follows and still appears to indicate that there's a problem:

  • Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
    NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

Note that this may delete your Update History - but all updates will remain installed, and can be viewed in the Installed Updates listing.

  • OK - I gave this a try and let the computer sit for about 90 minutes before rebooting and rerunning the diagnostic below.  It seems to show the same issue:

  • YOu appear to have a 'non-standard' error - however, I'm not really happy that you have the correct drivers installed, and it may be this that's causing the problem, still....

Please open Device Manager - in the Menu bar, select View, then Show hidden devices

Are there any entries showing either red crosses, or yellow triangles? if so, what is the exact name attached?

If not, please try installing this set of drivers...

    http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=YRMXM&fileId=2731095204&osCode=WLH&productCode=dimension-9150&languageCode=EN&categoryId=SA

There's a possibility that either the drivers you did manage to install are the wrong ones.

  • First of all, thank you for all of your patience and suggestions in helping me solve this frustrating issue!  I checked for hidden devices and there were no red crosses or yellow triangles.  I also installed the driver from the link you mentioned - the install process indicated that I was going back to an earlier version of the driver, but I went ahead with the install anyway.  If I'm reading the diagnostic below correctly, it looks like this may have solved the issue ?!?
