Indexing Of NoIndex Meta And Other Errors RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

As previously posted, I have been getting very anomalous results.  The problem previously posted related to inconsistency of results over short periods of time.  This one relates to the composition of all the results I am getting.

    In searching for:  site:http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk

    1)    I seem to be noticing a worrying trend where the content pages of my site, which are in the site map and should be indexed, are being replaced by their frame containers which contain the NoIndex Meta and should not.

    2)    There are always 2 pages indexed that do not exist, one of which I don't believe has ever existed.

    3)    The number of pages missing now seems to be going up, whereas previously it had been falling.

    4)    There usually 4 pages duplicated, but these are not always the same!

I append a breakdown of today's results as an example.

    At very least, can we:
    a)    Avoid indexing pages with the NoIndex Meta
    b)    Remove non-existent pages

It would also be nice to:
    c)    Include the missing pages
    d)    Remove duplicates

    Thanks and Regards,

    Charles

  • Whats you’re sitemap url?

As far as I can see you have really messed it up with all the folders. Why do you have the none framed and the framed site in same folder? Why did you not split these two in a earlier stage with folders “frame” “noframe”, then you could use the robots.txt to prevent the crawlers to enter the “noframe” folder. That would at least prevent you from some of the duplication.

Then… The use of folders in folders in folders and then a LoooooongConfusingHTML name makes it very irritating to try to look into the problem you are mentioning.

    But first: Sitemap url plz..

    Best regards

As far as your other comments are concerned, the layout of the site seems very logical to me ...

There is no seperate framed version of the site, that would double maintenance by duplicating all the contents pages, and double take up of my limited web space.

The directory structure follows the site structure of the index, and each directory is named accordingly.  In each directory there are one or more contents pages.  Each contents page has a filename closely related to its title, so if a page has a long title, it will also have a long filename.

Each contents page can be loaded in it own right, but each also has an associated frame container page of the same name prefixed by 'Frame' which loads it into the frames, if that's what the user prefers, as I do.  With one exception, the contents pages have no Robots Meta, and should be indexed and cached, while every frame container has ...
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex, noarchive" />
... and therefore should not be indexed or cached.

If the robot obeys the tags as it is vaunted to do, I can't see that this arrangement should cause any problems?

  • Hmm… So that was the reason I could not find it.

You are using domain.com /SiteMap.xml and not domain.com/sitemap.xml like the rest of the world.

I’m not sure what causing these problems, so I will not try to come up with a conclusion. It seems like you have to wait for Brett to answer within the next 10 days or so.

    Best regards and good luck!

  • Er, I thought I was doing that here!  What else am I supposed to do, where, and does it cost?
    Tuesday, July 15, 2008 8:07 PM
  • Sorry for the delay.

    It costs nothing.

Request URL removal through the Live Search Site Owner support form and let me know the support ticket number so that I can track it for you.

    Thanks,

  • Well, I eventually found a likely looking URL, and raised a ticket SRX1073384350ID - Live Search: Other with the following info ...

I have two ongoing problems logged in the Live Search Webmaster Center Forums » Crawler Feedback and Discussion Forum ...

    http://forums.microsoft.com/webmaster/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3592771&SiteID=79

    ... and ...

    http://forums.microsoft.com/webmaster/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3322342&SiteID=79

While I have a feeling that the second problem may be affecting results displayed by mixing historical results with current ones, this problem primarily relates to the first discussion: Indexing Of NoIndex Meta And Other Errors

As described therein, your crawler seems to be ignoring the following line in the frame container and other pages on my site:

           meta name=robots content=noindex, noarchive /

Note: the above line was incorrectly reproduced despite being cut & pasted directly from an example page on my site.  Let's try again, this is what my pages actually contain ...
    Code Snippet
        <meta name="robots" content="noindex, noarchive" />

    ... to continue ...
There are also two URLs listed which are certainly at least very out of date, in fact I'm not sure the second ever existed:
    http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/Index.html (cap I)
    http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/index.tml (no h)

The first is not showing today, but the second still is.  Please can they be removed?  For now, I've p ut a redirect 301 on both to the proper location:

    http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/index.html

    Search query/Keyword
       site:http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk

    Search result URL
       eg: http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/Macfarlane/Music/SallyInTheWoods/FrameSallyInTheWoods.html

Site(s) on which action needs to be taken
       http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk

What is the frequency of the problem?
       Always present [Always present]

I recieved two replies.  Relevant excerpt from first dated 18/7 ...

Thank you for writing to Live Search Technical Support. My name is Vivian and I understand that the crawler is ignoring "meta name=robots content=noindex, noarchive /" in the frame container and other pages on your site. You also mentioned that you want to remove sites from Live Search. I realize the importance of this matter.

I will now be escalating your email to our product specialists for further investigation. They will directly take action on your request and will be contacting you with an update soon. Thank you for providing all the details required.

    ... and second dated 21/7 ...

We have done the cached/content page removal in ID 151642 for the requested page. The changes will be reflected after 2 business days.

But today 25/7 the only thing that's changed is the 'bad' URLs have been removed, so I guess that's at least something, though there's now another questionable one to an rtf file, but it hardly recompenses me for losing more contents pages to frame counterparts containing the NoIndex Meta:

    Date         11/7    25/7
    ----------------------------
    LiveSearch    101     107
    Duplicates     16      17
    ----------------------------
                   85      90
    NoIndex        24      32

    Bad             1       1
    ----------------------------
    Good           60      57
    Missing        22      28
    ----------------------------
                   82      85

Live Search Header Total = 486
    Pages Actually Listed = 107
    Duplicates + NoIndex + Bad + Good = 17 + 32 + 1 + 57 = 107

Total Pages in Site Map = 83
    Good + Missing + NoIndex = 57 + 25 + 1 = 83

Also, there still seems to be a major caching problem as previously posted.  For example, when examining the above results, one of the missing pages was 'The Vicar, The Dog, The Cat, & The Duck', yet searching for ...
        vicar site:http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk
... instantly finds the correct page ...
        http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/Macfarlane/Reminiscences/VicarDogCatDuck/VicarDogCatDuck.html
... and the same happens with 'Accents'
        http://www.cemh.eclipse.co.uk/Macfarlane/Reminiscences/Accents/Accents.html

All in all, the impression is of muddle and inconsistency, yet, and here's the laugh, two other major search engines are even worse!  At least LS *has* indexed most of my site, and I do get a few hits thereby, so thanks so far at least.

But what does it take to get the crawler to respect the meta?????

  • As it took me some time to compose my earlier post, I missed this which was posted between my starting and finishing it.  However, as you can see I've done what you suggested.  Perhaps you will let me know any further outcome?

    Thanks and regards Charles.
