How to restart RPC RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an XP machine attached to Windows 2000 pro machine. The latter is an ICS gateway.

I have just installed xampp on the XP machine when I ran a service ports scan from http://www.grc.com it showed port 1025 in blue. Reference  http://www.linklogger.com/TCP1025.htm suggested this was RPC.

I then tried stopping RPC on the XP machine. The stop option was greyed out but after clicking on "Eigenschaften" (It's a German or Swiss German version of XP - I believe this means "Properties", but my German is not good) I (a) changed the passwords (I don't know what these previously were) and (b) clicked on something like "local" instead of "remote". (I can no longer access the "Eigenschaften" tab so I don't know exactly what the German was.)

This allowed me to stop the process, but after rebooting Zone Alarm Pro didn't come up and a range of other "funnies" were apparent. However when I go into "Verwaltung" (Maintenance?) in the Control Panel and try to reverse the change, RPC will not start. I get a failure 1058 which says German to the approximate effect of, "the service is disabled or not connected to activated equipment".

Uninstalling Zone Alarm made no difference.

Where can I find out how to get the machine back in working order? Note that it was second hand and came with no XP disc.

Things that are now non functional include:

    System Restore
    User Accounts
    Network Interfaces

Hope somebody can point me in the right direction.
