What is Task Manager?
definition of Task Manager :
Task Manager shows you the programs, processes, and services that are currently running on your computer. You can use Task Manager to monitor your computer’s performance or to close a program that is not responding. If you are connected to a network, you can also use Task Manager to view network status and see how your network is functioning. If more than one user is connected to your computer, you can see who is connected, what they are working on, and you can send them a message.
Tip
You can also open Task Manager by right-clicking an empty area on the taskbar and then clicking Task Manager, or by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
//copied from Microsoft Windows Vista Help and support.
----------------------------------------------------
but in Windows Mobile accessing to task manager is too hard when a program stops responding (hang) and you need to soft rest(reboot) your device and wait a long time until device completely boot up.so you need restart your device about over 5 times in a day (with third party software).
In PC >>quote>> You can also open Task Manager by right-clicking an empty area on the taskbar and then clicking Task Manager, or by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ESC.
but in Windows Mobile There is hot Key for fast lunching task manager.
in PC task manager is the best Option to close a program that is not responding but in Windows Mobile users prefer to soft reset.
my idea :- adding a hotkey for taskmanager.
- adding some possibilities to task manager "processes , services"

WWW.Microsoft.com : Unfortunately you can't upgrade your Device From WM03 or WM05 to WM6.5.
Upgrading Windows Mobile version(ROM) in most Pocket PCs in impossible but in some devices you can change your ROM easily .
for example :
1- you can Upgrade your WM05 to WM06 or even WM6.5
2- you can copy your ROM to PC and alter some part of ROM (Splash Screen - add pre installed program - change About - Change some Part off Registry ) and Then copy it into an old device.
///its one of critical Windows Mobile Problems : ~ Microsoft release new version of Windows every 6 month. in PC, you can buy a new installation Disk But in Pocket PC you most buy a new device.

Thanks for opening this topic and I would like to share with you my ideas.
I’m really disappointed from the features of Windows Mobile, which I believe don’t satisfy or give what expected to it’s targeted customers!
I will list below some of the features that annoy me and then some of the features I hope they take in consideration.
1. Contacts information:
a. The supposed to be owners of the mobiles having your operating system are executives and business men. Many of these owners have many mobile numbers (private, business, and other mobile numbers in the different countries they stay or have business), and the have as well many office numbers (two or three office lines in addition to direct number), and the same applies to fax numbers. Unfortunately windows mobile software and outlook program don’t allow us to have option to add all these numbers!
b. When two persons have the same contact number (for example two persons from the same company or living in the same house). If it’s the company number it should display the company name instead of any of persons name, and if it’s home name it should display “…….... Home”
2. Messages:
a. Windows mobile software compared to other mobile softwares make it very difficult to send same message to different recipients, or if we want to send same message to two different numbers! If we want to do that we have to do it manually and add them one by one!
b. Windows mobile software makes it impossible to send a message in certain day in future contrary to other mobile softwares!
3. Alarms:
a. Three alarms are not enough for the category of people using mobile with your software. I believe we should be allowed to put as many alarms as we need, as other mobile softwares do.
b. When we snooze a pop list should come asking us to choose the time from a list of 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, 1h, 1 ½ h, 2 h, 3 h.
4. Reminders:
a. We should be allowed to choose the snooze time that is suitable for us.
b. When we snooze a message asks us if we want to choose snooze time, if we ignore it or if we say No, a default snooze time is considered (which should be possible to set through reminders setting). If we say yes a pop list should come asking us to choose the time from a list of 10, 20, 30, 45, 1h, 1 ½ h, 2 h, 3 h, 6 h, 9 h, 12 hrs, 1 day, 2 day
c. I wish you can introduce a simple reminder or alarm that starts after a pre defined time such as 30 m, 1 hr, 1 ½ hr, 2 hr, 3 hr, 4 hr, 5 hr (this useful in case we want to call someone again, if we have to follow up or pick up something that takes certain time, or in case of paid parking, etc.)
5. Calendar:
a. There should be an option to display a list of all coming appointments, as well as all recurring schedules and anniversaries
b. Whenever we select “New” we should have an option that ask us to choose between, meeting, birthday, anniversary, task, or etc
6. Synchronization
a. I find it illogical that we can’t back up SMS messages (or back it up through the internet only!).
b. We hope that active synchronization make it possible to back up and modify the messages through PC as other software does.
c. We hope that we can import the old messages that we had on our old mobiles to our new mobiles that uses Windows Mobile softwares.
I hope they find my comments useful and they consider them to improve the software.

Hi eveybody,
after on week of use, I find that Win mobile would benefit form a major rethinking. The interface is unpleasant, complicated, and should be more oriented to users. The iphone and symbian are light years ahead in terms of usability and user friendliness (sincerely sorry, and I hope that I do not hurt the engineers who must have worked on this system). As examples, I would suggest the immediate following improvements:
· possibility to organise all the apps in "pages", so that the do not appear altogether in the same screen.
· possibility to customize the shortcuts bar by adding or removing elements (I have this bar on my touch 2, not sure if this is a standard feature);
· possibility to access all options related to an app from within the app (manage folders etc) . Sometimes it is not the case.
· possibility to delete any kind of app. Eg. I do not care of MS money, Ms live etc. and even, I do not want Facebook ! Or, at least, I should be able to put them in a folder (see above, that I may hide away and open only when needed). Solution : implement a comprehensive uninstaller application.
· I needed to do hard restore of my phone. All the customisations I had made got lost. Very, very annoying. This because the active sync backs up data, not the configuration. Solution: Introduce a complete phone backup.
· better management of contacts : no need to duplicate contacts or chose between outlook and sim. It is unnecessarily cumbersome. Plus, there should be the possibility to customise the fields you want for the contacts. I do not care of the mager, kids, birthdays etc... While I mmay need to have 2, 3 different mobile numbers or anthing else (eg: occasion we met, etc). Solution : a better contact manager.
· Apps remain in background even when you think that they are closed. They continue to appear in the drop down box top right on the screen, and the continue to consume unnecessary memory. They appear to remain in background mode, because when you shut them don from this list, memory is freed. There should be a way shut the app down. e.g. if you take a pic, and then go to something else, the camera will remain in the list of active tasks; Unnecessary. Solution : allow for minimisation AND quick shutdown of apps, from within the app.
· Reintroduce hand writing recognition. Small keyboards are a pain to enter data.

I would like to add another contructive comment, rather than an apologetic and biased advertising.
I managed to add categories of contacts, that was easy, but not how to delete them. Could someone explain, please?
Also, when you have categories, it is useful to be able to see only certain categories ignoring the others. Eg: I want to see all the restaurants in my list, all the hotels, but not all the friends etc. Or, I may want to see only the contacts not in categories, like in "good" old palms. That does not seem possible for the moment.Thursday, October 22, 2009 10:03 AM -
Me again, sorry for multiposting.
does anyone actually read and make use of the comments here? does it make sense to continue to provide inputs?
Thanks for answers.

You could very easily make Windows Mobile better - much much much better.
A simple start would be to keep the finish program / OK in the top right hand corner - not DONE in bottom left like it does at annoying times in TouchPro. Another would be to return to the previous window when a window is closed.
I run a HTC TouchPro 2 which is a fantastic piece of kit reduced to rubbish through some p***-poor design features, like stupidly positioned buttons. For example writing a SMS txt is a not helped by the on/off switch being where you hold the phone when the keypad is pulled out. You therefore get half way through a TXT and whoops the phone goes off. Windows mobile ensures that it takes over 10 clicks to get back on the same screen, sigh.
My first Synchronise with Outlook 2008 on Vista was interesting. What is the logic of synchronising an empty Outlook with a very populated Outlook and transferring over the blank database? Thanks Microsoft for wiping out my contacts list, luckily I have years of experience based on lack of trust, and I had a backup.
The most recent annoyance was to lose my wife's contact details, as I discovered that they were merged into mine (ie my details got her picture and her details disappeared). I do wish the system would credit me with the intelligence to manage my own contacts.
TOUCHFLOW- I have to use the Touch Flo menu system to get the big numbers for the time display, as strangely Microsoft has removed this useful feature from the old interface. For me TouchFlo is a menace to use - take for instance:
The one TXT message shown - why that one? and not the most recent, or even the unread ones??? bizarre
The Windows explorer thing - why doesn't it show your last session easily - and why limited to 2 tabs???
It is so hard to select a link in the Internet Browser
It never seems to do the same thing twice
The Favourite list seems to clear every week
Alarms for a calendar event ring at midnight of the day of the event
The menu bar disappears when in landscape
Pressing the top bar only gives the outstanding txts - not the battery, date or other relevant settings
VERY LARGE MENU OPTIONS THAT GO
OFF THE
PAGE
VERY BIG ICONS IN START MENU THAT ALSO GO
OFF THE
PAGE
(Sorry, I just find capitols and large icons annoying - its a bit like being patronised)
Strange applications that I do not understand - One Note Mobile, Remote Desktop Mobile, WordCard Mobile
Note defaults to a massively zoomed format (?)
So hard to change anything
Txt messages seem to be sorted into conversations - but sometimes it would be nice to see ALL MESSAGES, especially when you press the ALL MESSAGES button. For instance I sent bus times to my daughter, and could never find this txt when I wanted to catch the same bus. This was infinitely easier in the old version.
I realise that I come from the old school that is typified by the fact that I double click to run an application, but I do feel that the Microsoft guys should pay a little more attention to detail when releasing an entirely new interface (TouchFlo, Office 2008, etc).

1) Able to put more mobile numbers to the SAME contact. Presently i think many are duplicating contact names like John1 John2 John3 with different sets of mobile or SMS number.2) Mobile number and SMS numbers can be edited to be different. It must be able to be different to be functional. Currently it can only be the same for my omnia2. This is a big issue as if overseas, the sms cannot be used. If i change the sms to with a + in front, the mobile number also will have a + in front. Or if i add a budget call code in front of the mobile number, the sms number will also have the code and making it useless. Symbian phones are able to do this years ago.3) Currently i am using a PIMbackup as i don't have windows to save to my microSDcard. This would also be a good standard software to backup phone data into the midroSD. Microsoft myphone is excellent and most welcome. But as a portable safetynet when the data is gone and there is no wifi or GPRS. current phone backup can only be to SIM card which is pointless as it can only store the phone numbers and lose the other phone contact data.4) Camera with option of silent photo shot.5) Not sure if it is me but windows mobile device centre leads to sites that keeps hanging or loading. Also the contacts of the windows vista can't be activated to synchronised.6) Additional Remark or customizable field in the contacts.Hope these comments are useful. It will be good if they are implemented as it will make the basic phone more usable especially for travellers and businesses. Thanks!Tuesday, November 17, 2009 7:33 AM -
If this provides any insight, the picture messaging implementation is carrier specific. As such there is some amount of customization that occurs on the part of the OEM for the carrier for what ever that carrier's implementation of picture messaging may be.

Direct3D and DirectX are something else that are hardware dependent. Currently for Windows Mobile Microsoft isn't enforcing any minimul level of performance for DirectX. This makes sense as it enables an OEM to make an inexpensive phone without being forced to add acceleration (ex: I would not expect a 99 USD unsubsidized phone to have 3D acceleration). Unfortunatly this becomes a problem in that higher end phones don't have hardware support for Direct3D either.
Right now this is rumored to be address in the next version of Windows Mobile in that there will be a stricter set of requirements for devices running the OS as opposed to leaving the feature set completly up to the OEM.

I run a HTC TouchPro 2 which is a fantastic piece of kit reduced to rubbish through some p***-poor design features, like stupidly positioned buttons. For example writing a SMS txt is a not helped by the on/off switch being where you hold the phone when the keypad is pulled out.You are the second person that I've heard make mention to this complaint. I've wondered how the buttons on these Touch Pro IIs are arranged. Here in the USA the four major carriers have the Touch Pro II but they are not identical. There are slight differences in their button arrangementss, two of the models have 3.55mm jacks and the other two do not, and so on. On the one I have the power button is on the edge of the part with the screen and I've not seen how one can accidentally hit is while using the keyboard. Is your button in some other location?
The most recent annoyance was to lose my wife's contact details, as I discovered that they were merged into mine (ie my details got her picture and her details disappeared). I do wish the system would credit me with the intelligence to manage my own contacts.
When you set up the partnership between the device and the computer can can select whether or not it will sync your contact information. There's an assumption made that people with different sets of personal information on their phone will be syncing their phones with seperate logins on the desktop. IF both you and your wife use the same login then the desktop will assume that both of you are the same person. It is possible to set up profiles in Outlook to get around that, but that solution is a bit more complex.
TOUCHFLOW- I have to use the Touch Flo menu system to get the big numbers for the time display, as strangely Microsoft has removed this useful feature from the old interface. For me TouchFlo is a menace to use - take for instance:
The one TXT message shown - why that one? and not the most recent, or even the unread ones??? bizarreTouch Flow isn't a Microsoft product. That's a customization that HTC did. I believe the previous clock that you mentioned was the one that was some what iconic on the TyTn II. That was also a HTC (and not Microsoft) product.

a suggestion:
i like the basic windows standard today menu (WM 6.5), because it enables a reminder of how many tasks you have, next calendar appt etc, if these items are included in the today menu.
however, there is no favorite contacts widget. it would be good to be able to quickly pull up favorite contacts from the today screen to make a quick phone call. currently, you need to go into contacts and find your contact. there is no differentiation in the degree convenience of calling a frequently or rarely called contact. one needs to get third party apps to get this functionality.
Also, the Notes program should be able to be added to the today screen.
in fact, an important appeal of the today screen is the degree to which it can be customized. as many different types of programs as possible should be able to be added to the today screen.
this is what makes it responsive to individual taste, not the overall pretty look or some predetermined style.

For the Phone Book search, how about including A to Z on the top or bottom. Then the user can just click on the first alphabet of what the user is searching for and the phonebook will search out contacts of the alphaet chosen. This instead of scrolling up down and down or pressing the Search button, Press the keypad, select and select.. lots of extra steps. This would be way much faster in searching within the phonebook.Friday, November 20, 2009 10:16 AM

Windows Mobile is Basic ??? user friendly ??? professional ??????????
What's the Problem ?????????????????????
WM is 66 of 100 Points !!!
so there is some problems .... there is't ????
we can't say "there is no problems , wm is very good , its inovation"
FROM WWW.WIKIPEDIA.ORG :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_mobileIn 2004, Windows Mobile accounted for 23% of worldwide smartphone sales.[75] By 2008, its share had dropped to 14%.[76]
Microsoft apparently has 50 handset partners,[78] 80% of the 50 million Windows Mobile devices made have been built by one contract manufacturing group, HTC, which makes handsets for several major companies under their brands, as well as under its own brand.[79]
An October 2009 report in DigiTimes said that Acer will shift its focus from Windows Mobile to Google Android.[83]
ZDnet said that "for all practical purposes, Windows Mobile is a dead platform"',[89]
Device maker HTC Corporation created some work-arounds to allow multi-touch to work on some applications it installed on its Windows Mobile phone. However, Microsoft applications within Windows Mobile 6.5, such as the Internet Explorer web browser will still not work with multi-touch.[104]
The interface of Windows Mobile 6.5 shows jarring inconsistencies, with some applications, such as Windows Media Player, requiring the user to hold a stylus pen to make it operate.[105]
Unlike Windows desktop computers, the Windows Mobile operating system cannot be directly upgraded by the user. Instead, phone owners are at the mercy of their telephone service provider to issue an upgrade, which often does not happen.[106] However, users with hardware that is capable of running the newer Windows Mobile releases, can install the newer releases by using official, unofficial, unmodified or modified firmware files and flashing utilities for their hardware, that can be found at the xda-developers forum.
Several analysts from both Gartner and J.Gold Associates have expressed concern about the long-term future of Windows Mobile.[107] Motorola and Fedex said that Microsoft had given a commitment to continue supporting Windows Mobile, at least for use in rugged industrial devices.[108]
On 25 September 2009, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer indicated that the company "screwed up with Windows Mobile". He lamented that Windows Mobile version 7 was not yet available. He said he had recently changed the Windows Mobile team to try to recoup losses.[109]
A survey by CFI Group showed that Windows Mobile users had a low level of customer satisfaction when compared to users of other smartphones. Out of a possible 100 points, Windows Mobile rated only 66, compared with BlackBerry (73), Palm Pre (77), Google Android (77), and iPhone (83).[110]- Edited by aalbo Tuesday, November 24, 2009 2:42 PM BUG FIXED

It's not an IE bug. I looked at the HTML that makes up your previous message and it is not well formed HTML. There are some unbalanced and misplaced tags (example: There are <LI> elements all through out the post and such tags should only exists in <OL> or <UL> tags, but you have no <UL> or <LI> tags in the previous post). So it looks tha the method you used to copy and paste the HTML fragments into the message resulted in a malformed message.
Update: I see that you edited the last post. The page is rendering correctly again. Thanks.

there is no difference between ....... :
Agreed, although there actually is a difference. Strangely enough the newest 6.5 version, which is the Zune-esque one on the bottom right, is the worst of all choices. It allows no customization nor direct access to some commonly used apps (unlike the older "Today" screen versions). I agree that WinMo's Today screen is an emabarrassment (which is why HTC, Samsung, etc. provide their own versions).Saturday, January 2, 2010 8:35 PM -
I agree with many of the above suggestions and would add some of the following to the list (a few are variations of some items above, but I felt them important enough to describe from my perspective).
- Combine the Today and Start screens into consistent/flexible UI “partners” – These two screens look like they came from different worlds (neither of which are very user-friendly). The Today screen lacks catchy icons but has some flexibility, while the Start menu’s icons/layout is distractingly busy and can’t be organized well. MSFT should take a cue from the iPhone and even Blackberry and create a good looking, easy-to-use and fairly flexible UI (sorry to say it but attractive and “sexy” does sell).
- Reduce the number of steps/menus involved with many functions – Again MSFT should take a cue from the iPhone about how less is more. For an example of WinMo’s excessive complexity see my item #6 below.
- It is currently too laggy/buggy – Even with all of my apps closed it sometimes takes 1 to 2 seconds for my HTC Pure to react to an action. This is a lifetime when standing out in the cold trying to quickly perform a function. The most consistently bothersome bug that I can site is that nothing happens many times when I tap the “Notes” tab of a contact/calendar/etc. (I sometimes have to close then reopen the app, or tap the other tab then tap the Notes tab again).
- ActiveSync (via Vista/7 WMDC) – 1) Provide the ability to view, resolve and/or have conflicts duplicated rather than merely written over, and 2) Allow calendar/task alerts that are transferred to the WinMo device to be turned off (the first thing I do when I pick up my phone is to clear all of the annoying alerts which I only want to see on my PC).
- Add Speed Dial via letter – The phone app should allow use of either the number or Qwerty pad. If using the Qwerty pad the speed dial function should be based on a letter (i.e., “A” to dial Apple, “B” for Blackberry…). It’s the most mnemonic approach to speed dialing and was incorporated into the PalmOS years ago.
- Improve Select/Copy/Paste – On my 6.5 HTC Pure this function is a complicated mess. I hold the stylus at the point of selection until some dots spin (this is not a hallucination), when a menu appears I tap on "Make Selection", then I am able to drag the stylus to select the text (which is limited to only that visible on the screen…this is another fix that’s needed), and finally I tap and hold the selected text and then tap on "Copy" from yet another menu that appears. This is an utter embarrassment compared with the elegant “moveable bracket” text selection function in the iPhone and BB Storm.
Add Visual voice mailMake the Search Function faster - It takes a good portion of a minute before it comes back with results. OTOH - the iPhone's search function starts returning results as you are typing in the text so you need not type in all characters if needed.- Make font control more consistent or selectable via application - WinMo gives you one font size selection that applies to the text in all apps. This would be fine if the result was consistent, but a given font size selection ends up with text that is fine in some apps but either way too big or small in others. Even worse, the font size is inconsistent within a given app. For example, the font size that I am using results in my Task list font being a bit small, while the notes associated each task being way too big. Again this sort of thing seems like an embarrassment that should have been fixed a long time ago.
- In general MSFT needs to better ensure that the manufacturers properly and more fully implement WinMo features – Why bother providing great features if the cellphone manufacturers don’t implement them or implement them properly. I know that this is core to the WinMo business model (i.e., the manufacturers are free to do as they choose), but when a WinMo cellphone doesn’t work well it doesn’t matter whose really at fault since WinMo technology starts with MSFT (and they deservedly get the blame). I learned of a perfect example just yesterday – my HTC Pure doesn’t allow the landscape mode to be used in most apps (only web browsing and messaging). However, it was brought to my attention that WinMo actually supports the landscape mode in all situations, it’s just that HTC chose not to fully implement this feature.

SPEED DIAL A LETTER Maybe I am missing something here. I have a HTC Touch Pro and when I want to dial a number I turn my phone into landscape and type a letter for the person I want to call. then I choose the name amongst the results. Is that what you are referring to? Because you can do it with the phone. You mentioned not being able to use landscape for all applications. I too have this ability so I don't understand why you do not. Here are my suggestions (Which may or may not have been implemented in the newest Touch Pro II) which I am not ready to buy as yet. CALENDAR -- When I click on this app it automatically goes to day view. I recall having the ability to choose which view it opened up on my Mogul and being able to save it so that was the default view, but with the HTC Touch Pro I have no choice to save that preference. Please bring that back. EMAIL -- I love the look of the HTC Touch Pro and I think it is a great idea to have the various email accounts appear as envelopes along the right side however, if you have more than 4 you cannot access them from the email home screen. You have to open one of them and then click inbox and then it will show you all of your accounts or go to menu. You should keep the envelopes along the right side but make them scroll much like you do for the favorite contacts. As you add more email accounts to that you can scroll through which one you want and be able to go directly to that inbox. MP3 TRIMMER -- Love this app but if you don't have MP3s you can't use it or you would have to take time to convert it. I have most of my music in AAC format because yes I own an iPod Touch (sorry Zune lovers) I think you should allow for any music format to be trimmed for use as a ringer or whatever you want to trim it for. RINGER VOLUME -- Sucks on the HTC Touch Pro I am hoping for those of you that upgraded that this has been improved. I have a friend that owns a Blackberry (sorry I cannot recall which model) and he plays music on his BB and you would think he had a small radio in his pocket the sound is so clear and loud. I know MS that is more a hardware issue than software, but you should demand more from these manufactures because it ends up reflecting on Microsoft and not them in the end. Someone else brought this up too. Yes many a time I have been typing in landscape mode and accidentally touched the power button. Now at least with my phone it doesnt' shut the phone off completely it would if I held it down for more than 2 seconds but it does make the screen go black. It really is in an odd place especially when you are trying to type a message. I know this an HTC issue but like I stated it reflects on you. Someone else also mentioned needing the ability to enter multiple numbers per person. I think you should be able to add up to how many numbers that person has, however I think the reason that MS didn't do that is because of Voice command. When you ask it to dial a number it can distinquish the numbers by where you placed it. If you have 5 work numbers and 5 cell phone numbers for the same person how would Voice Command know which one you are talking about? Currently there are options for mobile, car and pager. That is what I use when I have multiple cell numbers for the same person. If they all said Mobile or even Mobile 1 Mobile 2 it is too much. I think they should leave that as is, but just come up with additional titles for work numbers such as WORK, OFFICE, JOB, Company, and so on also for cell numbers titles such as mobile, cell, car, pager, and so on so if someone has more than three, Voice Command can still tell which one you want. Oh here is an idea allow us to customize the name. There is currently no way to rename the categories or titles in the edit section for contacts. I agree the minimum should be 5 cell, 5 work and 3 home numbers for each allowing us to go up if needed but letting us rename the titles for those numbers that way VC can distinguish between all of those numbers. Speaking of: VOICE COMMAND -- This program needs updating like no ones business. I spend so much time repeating myself especially if I am in a noisy environment. Mostly my car and the wind seems to wreak havoc on voice command understanding my commands. Just fix it so no matter how I say the name it recognizes it. I am female and I have to lower my voice for it to understand me most of the time. RECENT DOCUMENTS -- Right now the start menu is the only way to see what program you recently used but when you were last in an excel spreadsheet or a word doc you have to browse to find that doc again. There should also be a place to access recent documents not just recent programs. This is available in the desktop versions of Windows why not here? BLUETOOTH -- With my PPC6700 and my Mogul I was able to pair my bluetooth headset and listen to streaming radio but with this newer phone I cannot. Now this may be the bluetooth device I have I am not sure. Since it is newer just like the phone I assumed it should do the same and more. If this is something that MS can fix please do so. FEWER STEPS -- I agree with whoever said this. There are far too many windows to go through to access what you want. Simplify this please. VOICE RECORDER - Love this program and was elated it was included in the Sprint HTC Touch Pro it wasn't in the Mogul. However, if you are recording something and the screen goes black it stops recording. So when I am recording currently ever so often I have to move my finger ever so lightly but not too lightly to get the screen to wake up before it goes to black. If there was ever a program where the screen saver shouldn't automatically go off it is this one. Or even if the screen saver does go off it doesn't affect what you are recording. FIX THIS PLEASE! Also with the naming of the files it should automatically (or we can have the option to set it for automatic) that when you stop recording you immediately go to rename the file. I have to remember to go back and rename my files or they all say VOICE### WEB BROWSING -- I hate doing it on my windows mobile and for the most part I don't. I have both Opera and IE and in fact Opera is default, but I dont' like either on my phone. The only reason why I would I attempt it is because I don't have wifi access so I cannot use my iPod Touch. The experience is so much better with that device than with my phone. However, since we live in a Windows world there are many websites that I cannot visit while on my ipod Touch because they are not built for use with Safari. They only use IE, but even if they use IE there are some sites I use while on my phone that I cannot click and go to the next screen like I would on my computer. It was worse on my Mogul and PPC6700. When you enter password and ID info on a WinMobi phone and attempt to click go on a whole lot of websites it doesn't accept the click. Maybe it is the website itself but I think it is the phone, because some of those same sites I can access on my ipod Touch. I hate the zoom feature it does it too much or not enough. There is no in between with the zooming on some web pages. SMS -- Someone else also mentioned the lacking features with this and I agree. I can send text SMS but not songs I just recorded using my voice recorder or picture SMS. This is software and not a hardware issue so you can add the ability. I know people with regular phones not smartphones that have this capability. Now I wasn't going to compare but the reason that iPhones are so user friendly is mainly because of the App Store. There are probably no two iPhone users or two iPod Touch users with the same exact apps on their device. Customization is the key and it shouldn't take a MCSE expert to do it. I feel with MS phones you have to sometimes know code and the architecture behind the phone to really tweak your phone and get it to work they way you want. I have visited countless Windows Mobile websites devoted to owners of these devices and even I who went to school for computers am intimidated with messing with my registry. You shouldn't have to do that to make your phone work for you. That is why currently your phones mostly appeal to geeks. You will never sell as many of your phones until you come to this realization. Your phones are not that user friendly. I know there have been regular peopole creating programs for the WinMobi phones for years now but they were expensive and some of the programs were filling voids that MS should have filled themselves. Hopefully your new MS store will change that. I expect more from a phone that costs as much as my phone did. I think MS as whole needs to step up their game if they really want to compete in this cell phone arena. Think outside the box.

OK, here's what I think is wrong with Windows Mobile:
1. Bad integration with Microsoft's own services:
- Where is Windows Live calendar sync?!
- Where is syncing of contact pictures with Windows Live?
- Why so many redundant services? Live, MyPhone, Exchange....
2. The lack of a decent SDK.
Visual Studio is great and all, but the UI elements Microsoft delivers for Windows Mobile development are useless.
3. No native support (i.e. no APIs) for accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor and multi point input.
Why is that such huge issue?
Well, the first reason is that HTC refuses to make its APIs public. If anyone wants to write an application for an HTC phone that uses the compass or multitouch, he has to 'reverse engineer' HTC's software and he gets zero support from HTC.
The second reason is, that with HTC now only selling less than 50% of all Windows Mobile handsets, more and more good WM phones by Samsung, LG, Asus and others appear. And all of them, of course, have different APIs for their sensors. That means, whenever someone wants to write an application that uses for example the compass, he has to implement and test the code for a whole bunch of different handsets, instead of just using native APIs (that don't exist on WM).
4. The look of its UI.
This is probably no surprise to anyone. Aside from the new Titanium today plugin, which looks really nice, the UI of Windows Mobile is just ugly. And notice, I explicitely say *look*, because the *concept* itself (softkeys, long press menus) is actually pretty good and enables a very consistent and logical UI throughout the system and all the applications.
5. The built in applications.
Windows Media Player is actually not bad at all, but only in WM6.5.x. In WM6.5.0, where it's not finger friendly, its unuseable. Even worse is the picture viewer. Compare that with what Android or iPhone offer, I think it's clear that the built in picture viewer sucks. Calendar and Contacts, however, are not bad, but they fall under point 1. for having an ugly UI.

What's wrong with Windows Mobile in addition to all the other stuff posted above (sorry if someone's already mentioned this):
Outdated built-in applications and functionality
Windows Media Player doesn't have xvid/divx support. Facebook lacks the functionality compared to the other leading mobile platforms. Email/Messaging interfaces look outdated and user-unfriendly. Built-in SIP (soft keyboard) is way to small and ugly. Java support is abysmal. Browser is slow and lacking in features compared to 3rd party offerings (Opera, Skyfire, etc) and competing platforms. Windows Marketplace's UI is ugly - fonts are too big in WVGA and the regional market segmentation means there's basically nothing worth buying in certain countries (like Australia). No native apps for stuff like twitter, weather, stocks - have to rely on 3rd party UI's like HTC's Sense 2.5 for such functionality.
Lack of (free) developer support
WM is a good platform, but without incentives or assistance, most developers are not going to bother making apps for WM. And that makes the platform much less desirable to be on.Wednesday, February 3, 2010 4:53 AM -
pls make a version of windows mobile that can last a month without the need to reboot..........Wednesday, February 3, 2010 6:18 PM

There's actually quite a few builds that can do this. Each OEM that is creating a Windows Mobile device must also create a customized build of Windows Mobile for theire device (there is no such a thing as a standard build, all Windows Mobile builds are customized). Unfortunatly some OEMs don't do as well as others and may include drivers, applications, or other software components that would benefit from improved stability.
The last two Windows phones that I've acquired have been able to go for well over a month without rebooting. The only time I need to reboot is when I install certain programs (which require a reboot to continue) or when I got done using the device for stress testing an application (which can result in a lot of settings being changed on the device making it easier to just hard reset instead of finding everything that was changed). If I were to go back to the devices I had before these two the story was not quite as good; the older devices I had did require occasional reboots.
It takes all the running you can do to stay in one place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must try to run at least twice as fast as that.Wednesday, February 3, 2010 6:43 PMModerator -
FreyBerry has hit on the one big disappointment I've had with Windows Mobile... I have just got a HTC Touch2 and my desktop now sports Windows7, and I was hoping that I would be able to sync the Win7 contacts with my phone, possibly one of the most basic things one might ask from this set up. Alas, it appears I need Outlook... still. I don't want to use outlook, I have no need of any of it's functions other than to be able to have my contacts on my desktop. Do MS not realise that they are been left behind by other platforms when it comes to some of the most simple things... my friends have iPhones and Macs (I have no desire to go down this road) and they sync all data... simply... without fuss... or the need for seperate programs. C'mon MS... this should be basic functionality!Sunday, February 7, 2010 10:28 PM

i am not sure what you mean by "Win7 contacts", what program or file are the contacts stored in?
peterMonday, February 8, 2010 1:55 PM -
Hi Peter,
On my Win7 desktop, when I go to my Start orb logo whatsits and click on my Personal Folder, one of the folders within there is called Contacts. Within this folder I can store individual contact details as .contact files. I don't believe there is any extra program as such associated with it.
Cheers

Hello,
since several years I work with mobile devices with Windows CE, WM5, WM6 and now with my HTC HD2 with WM6.5 - and - since several years I am annoyed about some nonexisting features, which should be normal today, as we use them daily on our desktops.
I think the kind of mobile devices will change rapidly in the next years and if Microsoft don't take care of it, they will loose the market. If I compare the improvements in desktop programs from microsoft with the improvements on mobile devices, the mobile devices seem to have an age of windows 2.1 ( by the way, I started with DOS 2.0 on a 8086 XT computer with the microsoft programs).
I suppose, that mobile devices will get full computers, which you will have allways with you in a dimension of a smartphone today. In your bureau you will only have a bluetooth docking, which couples automatically keyboard and screen to the device of the people, who are just using this desk. Identity cards, social cards and driver licenses are electronically stored on this device and will show the legitimation by the fingerprint on the screen. If you can imagine this way, you can also see, that there is much to do for Microsoft - first to bring windows mobile to an actual needed status.
There are three main problems, which are not solved:
1. Today we are working with very much personal datas, much more than some years ago. You must be able to structure them and to syncronize these structures.
2. You must be able to say the system, how it should handle with your data, which are allways the master datas and which is the master device for which datas.
3. Only the user can decide, which quality of datas is needed and the system should not be allowed to change this definitions by itself.
Some examples allthough several articles here exactly match these needs. For my business I collected more than 2000 interesting links for the different fields of my business and they are very structured in my favorite list of my desktop. Otherwise I would not found the links again, if I need them. Trying to sychronize them with windows mobile is totally unpossible. The first filter is Activesync, which deletes all links in subfolders. If I then start IE on my mobile device, all favorites are one below the other without any folder. It is totally crazy to ask me to scroll through some hundred unstructured links to find, what I need. So I don't really use the internet on my mobile device.
A similar problem with contacts. Do you put shoes, shirts, pants and jackets in one drawer in your cabinet at home? I don't suppose it. But why should I do that with my adress lists? With Microsoft programs it is not possible to transport my structured contacts to the mobile device, as subfolders are not allowed. Categories are not the solution, as it is only a view filter, with which you can not even sort by one click in Outlook (2003).
The same behaviour with music and video files - whatever program of Microsoft you use on a mobile device you get a data hotpot.
If you must synchronize your datas between desktop and mobile device, it is not possible to force the system to handle e.g. the desktop datas as master datas, which should not be changed. I don't know, how often I lost calender datas by the wrong sychronization of Activesync.
To explain, how terrible it can be, if you cannot decide, how to sync: I have three computers,I frequently use and all are internally synchronized over an Exchange Server. First problem, I can only synchronize my mobile device with two of them. If I first sync with PC1, the datas of the desktop are written to my Mobile device. If I then connect my MD to PC2 the system suppose, that the datas on my MD are newer and overwrite the datas on the desktop. The desktop sync to the exchange server. The exchange server to PC1 and if I connect the MD to PC1 again, the datas from PC1 overwrite the datas on my MD - an endless cycle.
Quality of data: For my contacts I stored personal fotos or scans of business cards in a folder of my mobile device and link them to the contacts. They are really sharp until I sync my contacts. For the sync the pictures are pixeled down and integrated into the contact cards of Outlook. Then they are synchronized back, as then the cards on the desktop are newer and after that I only see these lousy pictures on my mobile device, as the links to the pictures of the higher quality are replaced by the bader integrated pictures. In this way, datas are manipulated by the system without my approval.
If I compare the usability of mobile devices with WM 6.5 for business people with systems of other system builders, I really don't see Microsoft in a pool position and I think, until now Microsoft didn't recognize, that the distance seems to grow each day. Yes, today you can use these devices as phone, to hear music on travels, to show some pictures to your mam, but today smartphones with Windows Mobile are no sophisticated business tools!
It is the first column, which I write about that, as I normally suppose, that it don't change anything. But - let's see - sometimes there are miracles :-)
