Unfortunately, the fact that you didn't buy it on a website is no guarantee - the key in use is still blocked.
For which version and edition of Windows is the COA on the case? Does the visible part of the Key match what you see on the COA sticker?

Your Key is from a not-for-resale MSDN account. You need to claim an immediate refund from the vendor - do NOT accept the offer of a new key.(all they are trying to do is to get past the 45-day claims window. or avoid you sending the evidence of their crimes to the authorities)

  • Yes the last fifteen caracters matches 9M2W4-B4HTH-KW973, the label says "Windows 7 Pro OA" on the first line and DELL on the second line. (i assume the COA is the sticker with the windows product key? There's another sticker but i think it's the laptops serial number. Anyway I can put up a photo if it helps). Anyway what baffles me is this is a DELL computer, from a certified dell retailer. Have the pirates became so good that they were able infiltrate Dell itself?

    No that's fine :)
In that case, try Telephone Activation, and talk to an operator....

    telephone activation.
     Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SLUI   4
    and hit the Enter key
follow the instructions - but when asked which service you require by the telephone ansafone, do NOT reply - this should force an operator to respond, who can deal with you.
Explain your problem - it appears that your Key has been blocked for abuse. (Darin may be able to confirm that). If you can demonstrate that you are the legitimate owner, they may give you another Key, rather than re-activate that one.

  • PS: i clicked on start, typed SLUI 4, and I launched the program. The only think that happened was a notification poping up on the system tray saying "Windows is not Genuine, click this message to learn how to get genuine". So what do i do now?

Really? Means my version is pirated? I suppose there's no point calling service center now right? :( Do you know if the manufacturers warranty cover this kind of things? Anyway thanks alot for your help guys.... appreciate it...

  • No manufacturer warrants a counterfeit copy of Windows.  The warranty is only good if the original copy of Windows is installed.  That is likely what the COA key is for, not what you have installed.  What you need is a full license copy of Windows 7 Pro or to restore the copy of Windows that shipped with the computer.  If you purchase a copy of Pro you can preserve your present installation by simply changing the product key with the link provided on the System Properties page.

But this copy IS the copy that came with the shipped computer, I've neither reinstalled nor changed the product keys of my current copy of windows. the COA is and has always been used for the original copy that came with this laptop.

Is it possible that the COA sticker is a counterfeit? What I don't get is why would Dell give me counterfeit software. I bought another computer from this same vendor 5 years ago and the copy of windows on THAT computer never gave me any problem. Which is why I'm a little upset that I'm getting this sort of problem.

  • Dell would not be using a MSDN key. You need to contact your vendor.

COA's can and have been counterfeited. Typically with MSDN keys.

So it's confirmed that it's a MSDN key? Does that mean I've got to get a new key? If I have to is there a way to get a genuine copy directly from microsoft without having to uninstall the current un-genuine version? I don't think I can bring myself to trust retailers anymore and I don't wanna mess around with my computer since I'm not very good with this sort of things.

  • Yes, you can purchase a copy of Windows 7 Pro from the Microsoft Store and, as I already said, use the key to cure the problem without reinstalling Windows.  You will be purchasing both the software and the product key so be sure to download both of the .iso files and burn them to dvd.  A lot of users just download the key but then regret it later.  The .iso files should be Windows 7 with SP1 integrated.  An integrated dvd is absolutely vital should you need to do a repair install at some future point.  At least one such 32bit and one 64bit dvd in your possession is priceless.
