Cannot Activate or pass WGA RRS feed

  • Question

  • I changed the HDD for my boss Gateway computer.I could not activate it. In fact, the option was not listed under System Tools at all. I also tried to do a Windows Update and it did not work. I have changed the key from the CD that came with the CD to match the COA on the case. That did not work. I ran a few apps and followed steps outlines on the FAQ here and it did not work.

When I called yesterday, I was transfered to someeone that was going to give me a new PID. However after waiting 20 minutes and then it being 9:00pm, I was dropped. Guess it was supports time to go home. What do I do?

I did some sniffing into your key. You have to phone activate, due to the fact that its a special OEM type Product that doesn't technically need activation. You should actually be using the OEM repair CD to reinstall.

This KB article will give more information about activation.

Please try this and let us know if you are able to activate.

  • No it did not help. Now the only diffrance is I have a WGATRay.exe. Called your phone and was told their is no phone support for WGA issues. I told him to focus on the Activation issue and he said there is support now.

  • Okay, issue is now resolved. I got Windows Activated and now can pass the WGA process.

I am good to go now.

  • I hear what you say about not needing to Activate. I kind of figured this much when I noticed that I did not have the option listed under System Tools. I also never received the reminder to Activate.

Once I ran a tool from here, the option then appeared. The only reason I wanted to Activate is that I could not download from Windows Update unless I activated first. The WGA check failed because the machine was not Activated. I other words, if I wanted to manually download from Windows Update, I needed to pass WGA. I could not pass WGA because XP was not activated. I could not Activate because it is not necessary for my version.

I did use the OEM CD by the way. It was just an install CD and not a Restore CD. Just the OS came on it.
