Live Mesh Messes Up Windows XP Display

Question
-
I'm having problem with Live Mesh on my Windows XP SP3 PC. When Mesh is installed, the display settings are changed horribly to Screen Resolution- 640 x 480 and Color Quality- Lower(4 bit). I tried changing the resoluition to normal settings but it is not happining. After few attempts I gave up and uninstalled Live Mesh and now the display is proper.I love to use Live Mesh, but seems to be something wrong with the XP + the hardware combination on my PC + Live Mesh. Is any one else facing the problem? is there any work around?Tuesday, November 4, 2008 3:17 PM

Hi,
While reinstalling video drivers (you shouldn't need to remove Live Mesh first) may fix the problem, we'd be interested in taking a look at your Live Mesh logs to see if we can determine what causes the problem. If you wouldn't mind, please collect your logs (Start Menu > All Programs > Live Mesh > Collect Live Mesh Logs, which will generate a .cab file on your desktop) and email them to lmprev@microsoft.com. Please reference bug 16570 in your Subject line, and put the title of this forum thread and your forum handle in the email text.
Thank you for helping us test Live Mesh.

Hi,
It would help if we could take a look at the Live Mesh logs from when this happens - though if you've already uninstalled Live Mesh you would need to install it again to collect them. If you're willing to do that, then collect the logs and send them to us, we can look into this further to figure out what's going on. Instructions for collecting logs and submitting a bug are in an Announcement at the top of the forums. Any other information you can provide about your hardware/software/drivers setup could be helpful as well (e.g., Do you have the latest drivers for your display adapter?).
Thanks,

Hi There,
I had the same issue when I installed Live Mesh on my XP SP3 dutch machine.
The solution I found was to reinstall my videodrivers. I downloaded the latest Nvidia-drivers and after a reboot all was back to original again. Don't know if this is a permanent solution yet, but I think it will.
In devicemanager I saw that Mesh installed some videodrivers so I thing it goes wrong there.

The same thing happened to me, in a classroom, right before class started. I am now staring at a 22 inch monitor with 4 bits of color. I tried rolling back the driver, didn't work. Tried reinstalling, it just keeps looking for another Live Mesh Curtain Driver. This is unacceptable!Monday, December 8, 2008 4:49 PM

I've met the same problem.I entered the "Hardwares - Device Manager" , found the "display adapter" was live mesh. After uninstalled the 2 live mesh drives, the PC recovered.Thursday, February 5, 2009 4:21 AM

Could you submit your logs and file a bug per the instructions here?

I have had the same problem. Once live mesh is installed my display does to 640x480 resolution. Attempting to change it is met with the message that my adaptor is for an old version of windows and cannot be used (which is incorrect).
I downloaded and installed the latest drivers for my display adaptors (ASUS extreme AX550) and it made no difference. Deinstalling Live Mesh fixes the problem. This is a real shame as Live Mesh is the perfect tool for keeping my desktop and laptop in sync and making my desktop files available to me as I travel. Unfortunately my desktop machine runs XP SP3, and I cannot upgrade it to Vista (which does not seem to have this problem) as I need to be able to run some software that will not run on Vista.

I have the same recommendation for you - submit a bug report with logs from your machines. That would be the best way to determine where the issue lies with compatibility with yoru display adapter. It is *supposed* to work on XP just as well as on Vista.

Hi,I noticed that installing live mesh:everything works, reboot, resolution is gone, reinstal video driver, reboot and it all works. These were the same video drivers as before the live mesh installation.I am using a nvidia 8500gt video card and xp sp3. In display adapters it now sayslive mesh remote desktop curtain driverlive mesh remote desktop mirror driverMovrvdrv32 (disabled)nvida geForce 8500GTWhen I adjust my display settings, there are 3 monitors indicated. 2 of them my regular monitors (1 and 3) and 2 is a livemesh remote desktop curtain driver of 1x1 pixels. It also warns that the driver can not be used when I press apply (the system has been started with standard VGA driver). The driver is 6.14.11.8618Since it is working again, I don't know if it makes sense making a bug report and I hesitate about destroying it again.PeterTuesday, July 21, 2009 8:02 PM

Go ahead and submit the bug report describing what you did to fix it. There's no need to repeat the process and break it! If you follow the instructions to include the logs, it will include the drive information for your system, too.

Has anybody figured anything out about this issue? I've notices some other threads and some other bug reports suggesting hte same thing. I'm sitting here on a dual monitor setup with some 640x480 4bit mirrored in each display. I can't do anything with my vid card driver. I'm on a geforce 6200 turbocache. I can't resize anything, and it won't let me extend the desktop. Tried disabling the curtain driver and restarting, which gave me a blank screen, so I had to use safe mode. I already uploaded a bug report with my logs. I would really rather not uninstall this. I've tried reinstalling drivers...any ideas?Wednesday, September 2, 2009 6:08 AM

Thanks for submitting the bug report. Although you probably won't get a response, your information is likely to help for identifying the cause and getting a solution into a future build. It clearly seems to be a driver issue - the question, of course, being whose driver? It could be the video card driver or it could be the Live Mesh curtain driver.
I wish I could tell you when to expect a new build, but I don't know, nor do I know if any progress on this issue has been made.

Thanks, Stephen. I went in to device manager and disabled both the curtain and mirror drivers, and things are pretty much back to normal on reboot. Live mesh is still making transfers and running in the system tray. I'm guessing disabling the drivers would get in the way of remote desktop. Is that right? That's ok for the moment.Wednesday, September 2, 2009 4:09 PM

Yes, disabling the drivers would likely mean that Remote Desktop via Live Mesh will either fail or be crippled.

Ok, now I'm having the same issue but without the success of reinstalling the video driver or uninstalling Mesh. My other monitor just gives the No Signal message and is blank. I'm happy to send logs. This seemed to have happened a couple of weeks ago right after connecting from the office. Had the same 3 monitor issue with one being the Mesh Remote Desktop Display Curtain, or something like that. Also using an Nvidia card - GeForce 6800.Tuesday, November 24, 2009 4:53 AM

Have you rebooted the PC? In your display adapter settings, is the curtain driver listed? Did you uninstall Live Mesh and reinstall your video driver?

Yes sir, to everything. I uninstalled Live Mesh, uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, did boots in between. Reinstalled Nvidia... still nothing. The curtain driver is no longer showing. I'm wondering if something knocked out half of the video card or something. I just get a "no signal" message.Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:16 AM

It sounds like it might be unrelated to Live Mesh, though I wouldn't rule anything out.
To diagnose it from a hardware perspective, swap cables and monitors. This is DVI, correct? Do you have the ability to try the card in another PC?
Logs and a bug report might be a good idea, though I wouldn't expect a response too soon - and maybe never...
How to Submit Bugs and Live Mesh Logs

I submitted the logs before uninstalling Mesh. Different email address, but the reports were submitted. I also thought about switching cables and I'm not sure what happened then, but now things are really messed up with the main screen the one I can't see. Fortunately I had reinstalled Mesh and was able to log in and switch the monitors around. I'll get my IT guy at work to see what he can do or if he has any other ideas. I realize it could be unrelated, but it just seems to coincidental since the problem existed when I got home and the monitor set up had the curtin where my other monitor should have been and nothing has worked since... but I agree, it seems odd.Wednesday, November 25, 2009 3:37 PM

Good luck and do let us know if you are able to determine that it isn't a hardware issue, but was caused by Live Mesh.

What's wrong with your Live Mesh? It messed up my display.
No idea how to fix this computer, I need to reinstall the entire System, unfortunately Windows XP.

I battled this problem with my display resolution resetting to a lower resolution upon reboot for months. At the Win 7 logon screen, it would blank the monitor, then go to the lower resolution even before logging in. I tried re-installing video drivers/etc. multiple times with no resultion.
Finally, by a painful process of running msconfig and turning on/off services one at a time, I traced it down to a Mesh related service (cannot remember the exact service name) that was related to using the Remote Desktop feature via Mesh. I went into Windows Live Essentials 11 setup and the Remote tab and disabled remote. I also left the driver disabled for Mesh. This fixed the problem and my display now keeps the resolution I set on single and dual-monitor setups (via HDMI and VGA).
Since I use DropBox and got little use out of the other features, I eventually went into Windows Live Essentials and uninstalled Mesh altogether.
This is running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Graphics is onboard Intel G43/G45 Express chipset on a Gateway Desktop with Acer 23" monitor.
...your mileage may vary, but uninstalling Mesh worked for me. I can still use normal RDP into the box without issues.
