Why are there many duplicate posts in threads? RRS feed

    I'm a new msdn Visual C# 2008 Express forum member.  I see a "lot" of duplicate posts in threads which make it difficult to extract information from the threads.  The duplicate posts show up in normal forum browings or in search results.  Is there something I need to set up on my PC to eliminate the duplicate posts or is that a bug in the forum software that needs to be fixed?

    The setting *Always Show Answers First On Thread Page results in duplicate listings of all posts marked as answer.

    I went to My Settings and they were already set like this:  (* = checked)

    HelpForum Preferences

     

    How do you want to see your threads?

    *Flat List View     oThreaded List View

     

    Other Settings

    *Automatically Show New Threads As They Arrrive

    *Always Alert Me By Default When I Post (Configure Alerts)

    *Always Show Answers First On Thread Page

    *Show Tag Clouds

    Do "you" not see duplicate posts in threads?  Anyone else see duplicate posts in threads?

    Anything else I should check?

    There have been other reports about duplicate posts, they were explained away by switching to the flat list view.  I don't see duplicates, but something is going on.  There was an update last week, it probably has something to do with it.  Hopefully the forum devs will pay attention to your post.

    By George I think you got it!  I unchecked that setting and I don't see duplicate posts where I saw them before.  If I see duplicate posts again I'll post again here.  Otherwise, consider my problem fixed.

    We did find a bug today and have a fix we're testing out, it's only in the threaded list view.
    We should have the fix out pretty soon.

    Thanks for sharing that info with us Sam.
    My "particular" problem seems to be fixed via bnborg's answer.  In case it helps, I've not used threaded mode at all yet.

    Ah thanks Skyzoomer for clarifying as well.

    So you're issue wasn't a bug, just understanding that we show the answers now at the top by default and then again in the ordered location it came in as.  This is certainly odd for some threads that only have 1 reply and the answer is the first reply, so you'll always see it twice in a row.  It's certainly more helpful for users coming into longer threads that have answers nested far below.

    My problem was not only seeing one post selected as "The Answer" twice.  I would see multiple posts in one thread duplicated.  Maybe it was because it's possible for more than one post being selected as "The Answer".  I donno.  At any rate, I think that option should be fixed.  If posts selected as answers are shown at the top of the thread, they should not be shown again in their ordered location.  Otherwise, just leave all posts in their ordered locations and make a bold frame around all "answers" to highlight them.  Posts should never be shown twice in a thread for any reason.  We have enough to read and try to understand as it is.... ;o)

    One wish list item:  Hope someday it will be possible to "preview" all user input before actual posting.  Many other forums have the preview option and it is so helpful to lessen edits to a post.

    Thanks to you and folks on your team for being on top of this forum.  It's a great bunch of forums.

    I think I have seen that also, but only once in a while.

    I spoke too soon.  Now I am seeing a lot of them, just about every thread I look at.

    Hello,

    THis is still a problem.  I agree that unchecking "Always Show Answers First On Thread Page" fixes the problem.  But the default settings (I've never touched My Settings before today) is to have Flat List View with "Always Show Answers First On Thread Page" checked.  This shows lots of duplicate posts everywhere and makes it hard to read.  I've always thought it was just a bug in the forum software.  And it still happens today, with almost every single msdn social forum I read.

    Is this behavior because it re-shows the parent posts with all of the child posts?  If so, I think it is confusing and unnecessary.  Most of the time I'm just browsing for an answer, I don't really care to know that the exact parent thread is where it needs to be.
