System error 2 has occurred

Question
-
I tried to run net start slsvc and got the System error 2 message. My software is legal. I purchased a computer from Office Depot with XP installed on it and mailed in a coupon for the VISTA upgrade. I have the disk they sent me to upgrade. I didn't get a copy of the XP program.
I've been running for a couple years with no problem. Then recently I started getting the "unauthorized change was made to windows" message. I had to restore to last know good start up (or something like that) but that doesn't work any more.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I read that I am supposed to copy my diagnostic tool results here.
Thanks in advance...

Hello i,
The core of your issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:
File Scan Data-->
File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\rpcrt4.dll[6.0.6001.18051]This means the file has been Tampered, Modified or has become Corrupt. Vista see this as an attack to bypass it's Licensing security.
To resolve the issue, you need to either repair or replace the file with a known-good one (of the proper file version).
Note: You may have already tried these possible fixes, but I strongly recommend trying again, using my exact steps.First try repairing Windows using System Restore:
1) Reboot Vista into Safe Mode
2) Go to Control Panel
3) On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, Click on "Classic View"
4) Double-click "Backup and Restore Center"
5) On the left hand side of the window, click "Repair Windows using system restore"
6) Select "Choose Different Restore Point", Put a check in the box that says "Show restore points older than 5 days", select the restore point that corresponds to the date Before you first noticed the issue.
7) Click the "Next" button.
8) Reboot back into Normal mode
9) Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality mode
If that doesn't work, we'll try doing a System Scan. The scan will look for bad Vista files and will attempt to repair them, if possible.
1) Login to Vista in Normal Mode (not safe mode)
2) Launch an Internet Browser
3) Type: %windir%\system32\ in the browser's address field
4) Scroll down till you find the file cmd.exe
5) Right-click the file and select 'Run as Administrator'
6) In the CMD window, type: sfc /scannow
7) Reboot twice and see if that resolves the issue.
If neither of these sets of steps resolves the issue, my only other suggestions would be either to contact Vista support at http://support.microsoft.com or reinstall Vista.
If you need to reinstall, you can login to Safe Mode to backup all your importent files, off the computer.
Thank you,
Darin MS

More to my previous post.
This is what I've tried so far:
Boot from Windows Vista disk
That gave me three options:
1) Install now - I didn't want to install new, as I was afraid I would lose all my files
2) What to know before installing windows
3) Repair your computer
This gave me a 5 options
|------1)Systems recovery options
| |---Select operating system (Windows Vista was highlighted)
| | |----Next
| | |----Load Drivers
| |
| |----Startup Repair (When selected this reports "Start up could not detect a problem")
|
|
|-----2)System Restore (When selected this reports "No points have been created on your computers system disk...)
|
|-----3)Windows complete PC Restore
| Restore your entire computer from a back-up (I don't have a backup from which to restore so I didn't try this option)
|
|-----4)Memory diagnostic tool (I don't think this is a memory issue so I don't select t this)
|
|-----5)Command Prompt
|-When I select this is gives me a command prompt from the X drive and I can't do anything with that
When I try to start up normally and log on as a user it gives me the message "An unauthorized change was made to windows.." message and only two options 1)Learn more online - which will take me out to the internet but no desk top functions
2) Close
When I press F8 while booting I can log on in Safe Mode and see all of my files. This leads me to believe this is not a hard drive problem.
I called the geek squad and they wanted $200 to look at it. I believe it's something simple but I just haven't found it yet.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.Sunday, April 12, 2009 8:35 PM -
Hello i,
The core of your issue centers on the line in your Diagnostic Report that reads:
File Scan Data-->
Thank you,
Darin MS
