Trying to use Hard Disk drives out of old cable dvrs and satelite dvrs RRS feed

  • Question

  • I currently have a Western Digital WD500AVVS I saved from a Direct tv dvr that was headed to the scrap yard and another 160 gb one I saved from a broken cable dvr box both Western Digital. I can hook them up go to disk drives view the mega bites but that is about it I cant format them or when I go to computer they dont show, assumingly because they are not formated but I can not find a way to format them . Ive tried making them external usb drives and doing this and making them a secondary drive . Here is the kicker I rescued one from a older Direct tv dvr 160 gb and was able to format and using it exrternally as we speak. Im not the best on a computer but im not the dumbest and have even built a few but Im puzzled. Can anyone help with this issue ? Ideas to try or a program that is free that would help ? My email is jon178134@yahoo.com or I will check back here to see comments. Please anything that I could try .

  • Hi.

First when you connected attached them to computer you need to rescan disks from Computer management.

Later if found the HDD then try to check them for any bad sector or corrupt of sector.
