No "licensing" folder under "%windir%\System32" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have Windows 7 professional 64 bit, on a Dell Latitude E5400. Everything was working fine.  I had a registry dump from another machine . Unfortunately I opened it :(((  (Should have used notepad++) Later I used my old registry dump(just taken an hour ago, prior to the mishap, which occurred almost a week ago) to restore. I had to re-install some applications. Windows is constantly showing the message "Windows 7 Build 7600 This copy of Windows is not genuine". I have a key, but when I try to update it gives me below error

The following information was found for this error:
               Code:   0xE000020B
Description:   Unable to find a detailed error description.
The facility code is: NULL (0x00) ; Facility error: 0x20B (523L)

I tried using a different key, with the same result. sfc /scannow returns everything is normal. Initially it reported errors, and those were automatically fixed.

     I have tried below instructions,

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser
    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the address field
    3) Find the file cmd.exe
    4) Right-click on cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
    5) Type: cscript %windir%\System32\slmgr.vbs /ilc %windir%\System32\licensing\ppdlic\Security-Licensing-SLC-ppdlic.xrm-ms
    6) Hit the Enter key
    7) Reboot twice

I got error, and saw that there is no "licensing" folder  under  "%windir%\System32"

I have rebooted my machine umpteen times. Another weird thing is below. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

               C:\Windows\system32>net start slsvc
                          The service name is invalid.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2185.
               C:\Windows\system32>

I have also tried the below with same results.

            1) Return to the cmd windows
            2) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
            3) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
            4) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
            5) Type: cd %windir%\system32
                    Move 7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0.C7483456-A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0and
                    7B296FB0-376B-497e-B012-9C450E1B7327-5P-0. C7483456 -A289-439d-8115-601632D005A0  to Desktop

            6) Type: net start slsvc
            7) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)
            8) Reboot Twice

  • Your installed Key is an MSDN-type one - if you are not a member of MSDN/TechNet then you are not entitled to use it.

The errors in the report are ones that I have never seen before, but I suspect that unless you can access a full restore point prior to your error, you will continue to have problems.

Your best option is probably going to be a repair install - or a clean one.

  • Thanks Noel. Yes, we have an MSDN license, and the key is from that.

I'll attempt a repair install and check.

  • If you need instructions....

Follow the instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

    - and they should help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)

Always ask questions first if you're unsure - either here, or in sevenforums.

    Good luck with it!
