Dynamics online: Adding products tab to account form view RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I'm looking to add a products tab to our accounts tab so that we can keep better track of what core product a customer is on, what software modules they've implemented and what pieces of hardware they're running too.

My current thinking is that  what I’d like to have on the form is:

Core software (pick one of 4 from a list)

Modules (10 or so check boxes)

Hardware (4 pick from lists, then a number entry box following for the number of units they’ve got)

I have created the tab and added the core software one fairly easily by directing it as a N:1 relationship to products, but that also picks up all the other products we’ve got in there. I was hoping I could use subjects to define between different groups, but have kinda struck out on that one.

    Any suggestions?

EDIT: Okay, I just realised (duh!) that I can use the attribute section in customization to hard code them in, but does anyone have any bright ideas to tag it all back to the product section and subjects?

  • In addition to Larry's recommendation, another option is to use Contracts for tracking products owned.  You could explain this as 'Best Practice' for CRM since Contracts was intended for tracking products owned by an Account.  This should provide all the relationships needed and the user can go to Contracts from the Account record or you can diplay the products owned from the Contract onto the Account record using the method described by Larry.

  • Hi guys,

Thanks for that, both answers sound like they would do the job, and Donna your answer sounds like it is the "official" way to go. In the interim, I actually set up the tab by setting up new N:1 entities sourced from the product section. While it is not 100% clean, as it allows the user to put any product into the three separate categories (Core software, modules, hardware), my users should be smart enough to know it is there to help them, and do it right the first time.

    Thanks again!

  • I would suggest perhaps an IFrame that would bring up a report(s) that would display the appropriate info. Or perhaps a dashboard in the IFrame.
