Is Internet Explorer your default web browser? If not, change it to be the default.
In IE 7, you can also try resetting everything to default settings - Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset button.
If neither help you get past the login error and you have no other security software installed that may be blocking the connection, please contact support.

Yes, contacting support *is* the answer, Alex.
Hopefully one of the other replies turns out to be the solution. If so, I will gladly update the answer, but until then the answer is to contact support.

No need to update the answer, since the Help page that deals with this particular issue in somewhat involved, and I did recommend going directly to Support in response to Alex’s previous post. But apparently the Help page for this particular error code did work as a solution in this case, and Alex was just looking for this: http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=onecarev2_5_client&market=en-us&querytype=topic&query=onecare_trou_error_80048869.htm
The other solution for this particular error code that seems to work for many people is this: http://social.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/onecareinstallandactivate/thread/baf82319-336f-4a1c-9e90-71b3f8f110d2/

Thanks, Greg. If the solutions offered do help and Alex doesn't need to contact support, then updating the thread with the correct answer is good housekeeping. And, I like to keep the forums as tidy as possible. <g> (As I believe you already know about me...)

Yes, I know and admire your housekeeping habits, Steve. The problem here is one of interpreting the situation. My original interpretation was that Alex had prematurely marked my response as the answer in his previous post, and was still looking for a solution. However, when he responded “last time when i fixed it i had to do some thing where i had to register these dll files anyone know about that”, it appeared that the Help page had actually solved the problem in the previous case and that Alex simply wanted to repeat the procedure after restoring his system. Hopefully Alex will post back to confirm or disconfirm this interpretation.

Yes greg is right but the other new is, is that that didnt work so my only choice now is to contact support

Thanks for posting back, Alex. That makes sense, because there appear to be a lot of different causes for this problem. If you haven’t already, be sure to try checking the “Automatically detect settings” box in Internet Explorer (Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings) before contacting Support. That seems to work for a lot of people. Thanks,
GreginMich
