Windows 7 not genuine, have DVD RRS feed

  • Question

  • My Windows 7 is not genuine but I have a genuine Windows 7 DVD. Is there a way to "upgrade" my Windows 7 using that DVD to make it genuine? I'd rather not lose all my data.

The above show that the installed Windows here is counterfeit

You have an apparent SLIC table for a Hewlett-Packard machine on a retail motherboard. The product Key is one which is ONLY valid on an HP motherboard, and ONLY when used with the proper Recovery media.

You need to reformat and reinstall using genuine media and Key - simply replacing the Key with a valid one may work, but the hacks used for to circumvent Activation and Validation would still be present, and are classed as rootkits, since they load very early in the boot process and hide effectively from Windows. They may also carry or acquire other payloads.

  • To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool

(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )

     Once saved, run the tool.

Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.x

      - in your own thread, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!
