Vista suddenly no longer genuine RRS feed

  • Question

  • Ladies and Gentlemen,

An unexected and very unwelcome problem turned up: My Vista x64 Ultimate is suddenly "no longer genuine".

If I try to register again by phone - the usual number blocks are empty.

If I try to change the product key to the correct one, I get error x0x800700D.

Suspected reason: Replaced faulty motherboard with a new motherboard that died within a few hours. Replaced that with a new one again, then changed the CPU as well.

    MGA diagnostic otput below.

Any hep would be really appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Harold

  • Hi HaroldJoe,

It's rare, but it sometimes happens that when attempting to Activate by Phone  the Installation numbers will show Blank.  To fix this, try to change the product Key to the key found on the sticker on the side or bottom of your computer (even if that key is already the one being used).  It's the process of changing a key that should reset the instalation ID and when you then try to Activate by Phone, the numbers should be Visable.

If you are still having problems, I suggest contacting your local Activation Call Center (list of Activation Call Centers: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/resources/vol/numbers.mspx). They should be able to assist you further.

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

    Hello HaroldJoe,

Wish you hadn't sent the money on a new Product key.  Your product key should be just fine.  Given the script error you found, my diagnosis is that there is a problem with your Vista (possible a corruption in Vista's Scripting Host) not with the key.

Since your computer currently has an OEM product key (ie the key that came with the computer) you don't get free support.  But Product Activation problems are classified as an "Install issue" and Install issues are always supported at no cost.  The problem is that when you call you are usually talking to a computer voice which doesn't understand (due to the nature of the problem) you do, in fact, have the right to free support.

I'm not sure if you can contact a US toll free numbers, but if you can, I suggest calling (800) 936-5800. After a bit of the computer voice talking, you will be connected to a human. Explain the issue (stressing that Product Activation is the core issue) and they will get you to a Support Engineer.

The reason I can't help you is my area of knowledge is in using (and manipulating) the Product Activation and Validation software and your issue appears to be an error in the software itself.

On a side note, you are already licensed to use your computer using the key from the sticker on the side of your computer.  The key on your computer is only good for that computer.  The new key, that you bought, is a Retail key, which can be used on any number of computers, as long as, the key is only being used in one computer at a time.

The new key that you bought is an extra license and since that key is not currently being used in a copy of Vista, you can give it to a friend, sell it or save it.

  • Hi Darin,

Thanks for your response. I tried resetting the product key already, as I wrote in my original post:

    > If I try to change the product key to the correct one, I get error x0x800700D.

Will contact the activation call centre.

    Thanks!

Yes,  You did say that, but you did not say what the "Correct One" was. My directions were specificly to use the key on the sticker on your computer.  If that was the key you meant by Correct One, I had no way to know.

  • Darin,

That's exactly what I did, sorry I wasn't clear enough about it. I entered the product key from the sticker, Windows activation is "thinking" about it for a while, then gets to a Windows Activation Error, errror code 0x807000D.

Is there anything else I can do before the start f the next wrking week (assuming the activation call centre is not manned 24/7)?

    Thanks

No, that should have worked...I have also never seen that error before.

If the Activation Call Center can't get your issue resolved, they should connect you to a Vista support Rep. They should Not tell you to call someone, they should connect you directly to Vista support.

NOTE: I've heard report that some call center reps can be a little unhelpfull (that's not how we train them to be) so if your Rep don't assist you very well, don't hesitate to ask for a manager.

The Activation Call centers are open 24/7 365day.

Very sorry i couldn't be more help,

    Darin MS

  • Hi Darin,

"A bit unhelpful" looks like a very British understatement to me. I have been talking to quite a few people at the activation centre in the UK, and none of them seemd to have a clue what I was talking about. And the Microsoft tehnical hotline keeps disconnecting me before I get through to a human being. Which is a bit frustrating.

The "0x8007000D" error message upon entering the riginal product key is discussed quite a bit on the web, unfortunately I haven't found a solution there, but I don't seem to be alne with the problem. Maybe any of your colleagues has come acrss it?

    Thanks

  • Update:

After lots of frustration I decidd just to buy a new prouct key. So now I have a new product key, I do exactly as Windows tells me, and I get exactly the same error = 0x7008000D.

And when I try to activate by phone, the bloks with the nine numbers are still empty.

Any suggestion what to do next?

    Thanks!

    Harold

  • I am having the exact same problem. How could you reset your product key. There is no phone number for reactivating by phone in the US. Have you been successfull in fixing the problem. Please share.

  • Another update - maybe this helps: Found on the web the command line to change the product key:

    slmgr.vbs -ipk

When I do that, I seem t get to the source of my 0x8007000D error. I geta Windws Scripting Host error message saying

    Script: c:\Windows\system32\slmgr.vbs
    Line:  1648
    Char:  9
    Error:  The data is invalid
    Code:  80070000D
    Source: (null)

Does this one ring any bells?

    Thanks!
