A few weeks ago a mysterious icon appeared in the system tray at startup. It's a six pointed white star. When this icon appears, the entire system freezes. I cannot click on anything including, taskbar, start, folders, desktop, etc. I only get the little thinking circle. If I CTRL+ALT+DEL, open the task manager, that too is frozen, unclickable. If I'm quick when I restart the system, I can open a browser and am able to browse the internet without problems. If I can open a program quickly enough, that too is usable.
I've tried numerous programs to try to cleanse this issue: virus scans, spyware scans, registry scans, crapware scans, whatever. I cannot get rid of it. I hesitate to do a system restore in fear that I'll lose too many downloads and pictures. Any advice? This is driving me crazy!
Oh, btw, it's vista 64 bit home edition on a laptop with an unsecured wifi. Yes, I know, secure that wifi. Any help is much appreciated.
