Mu homeserver software has turned to a snail

Question

I feel pretty dumb. But I got WHS for Xmas, and installed it on a spare PC, and everything was working great. Created backups, shared folders, duplicated a couple. I was a happy camper.
Now - 8 days later and 80 updates later, WHS is working like a snail, with 100% CPU use, though I can't find any resource hog.
I have almost no space left on the system drive. It oscilates between 20 mb and 1.5 Gb.
What do you suggest I do?Sunday, January 10, 2010 4:59 PM

Yes. The console will probably continue to report the old partition sizes, and may not be able to calculate the server storage pie chart successfully. These are both cosmetic issues, but it's possible that there will be other long-term problems as well.
Now I'm curious - why does WHS limit the size of the C-drive to 20 or 40 G? I had a lot more space on that drive. Will I damage it if I try to increase it with Partition Magic?
...
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)- Marked as answer by Cryoruggie Wednesday, January 20, 2010 12:05 AM

It might be because Windows Search is indexing all of your files on your server. When you say "system drive", do you mean the entire primary drive, or just the C partition?

Just the C-partition. I have a gazillion bytes of open space. They also gave me a terryabyte HD for Xmas.

Just the C-partition.
Have you tried to determine which file is growing? Have you check the server log files (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Home Server\logs)?Sunday, January 10, 2010 6:10 PMModerator -
None of the files were very big. For what it's worth, even using the mouse was a hassle. Had to move it to a best guess location, then wait for the cursor to catch up.
I closed down my copy of Vipre that I haqd running, as well as Catrbonite on-line backup. That seems to have freed things up a bit to where I can move the cursor. I guess my nest setp is to put them back on slowly and see which one does the damage. Maybe also see where th big file(s) are.
So why can't I make the system disk bigger than 20 Gb?Sunday, January 10, 2010 11:51 PM -
You could download and install the freeware version of TreeSize on your server and analyse your C: drive with it.
This should help to determine, where the space eaters are located.

Thanks. I finally figured out that Carbonite was causing the problem by putting a lot of temporary files onto the C-Drive. When I shut down Carbonite the problem went away.
I guess I was being opportunistic trying to backup my backup of a backup....
Now I'm curious - why does WHS limit the size of the C-drive to 20 or 40 G? I had a lot more space on that drive. Will I damage it if I try to increase it with Partition Magic?
And thanks for the "Treesize". Challenging to read computerese German though. I have to think rather than skimming through it....Tuesday, January 19, 2010 4:28 PM -
