Sync SQL Server CE with SQL Server Over Internet RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I have an application which is required to synchronize a local SQL Server Compact 3.5 database with an SQL Server database over the internet. The SQL Server database will only occasionally have this single local client connection, synchronizing only small amounts of data. I have looked at sample code using a WCF service to achieve the above but I don't know if this is overkill for such a simple setup. Is direct access to a SQL database over the internet via a WinForms application bad practice or is it acceptable in the above scenario?

  • is it acceptable for you to open up ports for your SQL database over the internet? the other benefit of doing the n-tier approach is you can have better batching if you need to.
