WHS2011 - how to add an external HDD RRS feed

  • Question

  • just installed WHS 2011.  It certainly presents a different view.  Simple question - how to add an external HDD to the server storage pool.  The external HDD appears in the list of available drives, but I don't see how to add it to the server storage pool.

never mind - just found the answer = WHS2011 has no concept of Drive Extender to automatically manage multiple disks into a single storage space. All disk management is done manually using the Dashboard so you have to manage your data storage across your available drives.

which "brain trust" at microsoft, decided to eliminate Drive Extender??

  • There is no such thing as a server pool if by that you mean the way it was done in WHS1 with Drive Extender. External hard disks are recommended for server backups only, albeit you can use them for data storage as they are initially given a drive letter. From the online documentation:

To increase the storage on the server, you can add an additional internal hard disk to the server. To add the additional internal hard disk, you must first shut down the server, next add the internal hard disk, and then power it back on to restart the server. Next, depending on whether the hard disk to be added is formatted, or unformatted, do one of the following:

    • If you had an internal hard disk that is unformatted, it generates the alert- “One or more unformatted hard disks are connected to the server”. Launch the Alert Viewer from the Dashboard, select the alert, and follow the instructions to format the hard disk and use it to store server folders.
    • If the internal hard disk is formatted with NTFS, the server assigns it a drive letter, and the hard disk appears in the Hard Drives tab. You can now either create, or move server folders to the new hard drive. If the formatted hard disk also includes preexisting files, then you can remove any unwanted files using the Drive Clean up utility.

When an unformatted internal hard disk is detected on the server, a health alert guides the user through the process of formatting the hard disk. It is recommended that you use external hard disks only for backing up the server.

  • Ok, what am I missing. Added 2 drives, formatted, they show up. Yet they are not being used. How do you set them up for spanning or striping?

  • You don't! The concept went away with WHS1 unless you trust your valuable data to a 3rd party add-in. You need to manually manage storage in the Dashboard allocating your shared folders to individual disks by drive letter.
