XP pro pirate installed over legit XP home RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

My friend has installed a pirate copy of XP SP2 Pro over her legit XP home believing it was an application she was installing, yes really.

Obviously the key has been pirated and now updates are blocked and XP is very out of date.

I have the original key for Home and have tried to change to that key but it is invalid for Pro of course.

The original is a Dell oem version, the Pro is literally a Chinese version.

Can anyone help to get updates working please or should I try the ETH0 crack?

    Thanks, George

  • GeorgeG5,

Tell friend to call dell and order a replacement Reinstallation CD for about $15.

MS research shows about half of downloaded/pirated copies of XP Pro have additional programs embedded in the CD that install along with XP.  Don't let the both of you be guilty of stupidity and leave something like that on her Dell PC.

  • One cannot simply change the product key in order to return from a Windows XP Professional installation to a Windows XP Home Edition installation.  A "clean install" of Windows XP Home Edition would be required using the owner's Dell Windows XP Home Edition Reinstallation CD.

  • Carey,

Thanks for the reply. I guessed that this would be the case but I neglected to mention that my friend cannot find the recovery CD(s) and there is no recovery partition, I have checked with Partition Magic.

Do any of the "cracks" work as I feel my friend is guilty of stupidity rather than piracy and I will use one of the cracks if they work.

Thanks and a happy new year to you all, George
