windows Validation - can I buy a valid key for this machine, details below

Question

Hi all,
Just recently acquired this machine and want to place a valid xp license key on it.
I purchased a valid 2005 MCE license thinking I could just enter it but the XP software will not take it when I try to put the key in.
I just wish to buy a valid key for this machine without having to re-install. Happy to buy another valid license pack, just do not know what this software is .. xp pro? MCE? dunno ..
any suggestions?
thanks for any help you can give.
Leslie

Hello elbowe,
When you say you are trying to enter the product key, where exactly are you attempting to use this at? The product key update tool will not work with Windows Media Center, if you wish to update your product key for this software you will need to reinstall the operating system. May I ask, where did you obtain your new license for Windows Media Center at?
Thank you,
Matt Prall, MS

hi thanks for the reply.
being a novice I bought a valid OEM copy of MCE 2005 from ebay. all valid from a good source.
anyway, I think I know where this is going .. re-install. Which is madness as all I want to do is enter a key , even if I buy it from microsoft. If I have to re-install I think I'll move to Linux and take the learning hit ... and sell the OEM MCE 2005 on ebay.
again thanks for your help

ps
I downloaded a tool from the web to update the key .. and that did not work.
I was going to track and hack the registry .. I care little for what happens for the machine, but re-installing I thought I could avoid.
but looking like I cannot ..
madness ... but that is MS for you.
cheers
Leslie
