Have to reboot WHS every morning RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been running WHS since October.  I am successfully using the file shares, remote access and back up.

However, since the beginning I have not been able to keep access to the server overnight.  I wake up in the a.m. and the connection to the server has been lost.  In order to regain connection I have to reboot the server.  It's pretty frustrating.

I have tried re-installing the connector software and updating both the console and client pc's.

I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the back up function because occasionally my wife's pc will not back up.

Anyone have any experience with this?

    Thanks,
    Jacob

  • I would have suspicions of the network driver or the network shutting down on power management. Does the server stay connected all day long?? Sometimes, a cheap network card in the server will be the best answer rather than running a built in LAN connection. Make sure it's a server driver installed too. That might get you headed in the right direction.

More hardware info would help too.

  • Have you checked the event logs on your server? Have you tried disabling backups for your wife's PC,. or for all pcs, to see if your suspicion is correct?
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Please check general energy settings and energy settings for the NIC on your WHS

  • This is the event that comes up in the event log

"The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer MAIN that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{3E384513-2B33-444C-BF37. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced."

  • You may be onto something there.  I have a NVIDIA NForce Controller and under power mgmt it was set to turn this device off to save power

    AMD Phenom 8450
    Triple Core
    2.10 GHz 4G of Ram

Network Card is built in to the Mother Board

I also have a 4 bay hot swappable hard drive rack, populated with 3 750G Hard Drives

I'll be a little more specific on this.  Yes, the server does stay connected all day long.  I don't actually know at what point over night it shuts down, but if I reboot it in the morning, I can access it all day remotely from my office.

What is a server driver.  I googled it and didn't come up with much.

    Hi,

Are there no other errors in the system event log?

Did you try Ken's suggestion (disabling backups on all PCs)?

  • I disabled my wife's computer because that one hadn't  completed a backup in quite a while.

I left mine on because it's been backing up.

    The problem remains.

Today I installed a NIC and set it up with server drivers, hopefully that works.  We'll see what it looks like in the morning.

  • At this point it seems like replacing the NIC did the trick.  THere were no errors last night and the server is accessible this morning by all computers, even my wife's MAC laptop.
