Network driver problem with ASUS P8Z68 MB

Question
-
I've built a new PC to use as a WHS 2011 server and this is the first time I've dealt with a server OS.
The PC is based on a ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3 MB, Intel Core i3-2100 CPU, 4 GB RAM and a 60 GB SSD as the system drive.
I followed the instructions on various fora to circumvent the 160 GB limitation and it worked really well.
The MB uses the Intel Z68 chipset. It also uses an "Intel 82579 Gigabit LAN - Dual interconnect between
the Integrated LAN controller and Physical Layer" for the network.
I don't know how much importance the 82579 chip contra the integrated part has to the driver problems.
When the WHS-installation has restarted a couple of times it continued with an installation (checker?)
and complained about missing network drivers, giving me an option to install them.
Through the device manager I saw that several devices where missing drivers, which didn't surprise me.
I had previously downloaded all driver packages I could find on ASUS support pages for the MB and the nearest OS,
which in this case was Win 7 x64 since no server OS appears as a choice.
I tried to use the downloaded driver packages in various ways to no avail, at least as far as the network drivers go.
This happens with the downloaded driver packages:
-When running an ASUS written installer it just says the OS is unsupported and quits.
-when running an underlying set-up program (which I guess the ASUS program would have started) it sometimes works and sometimes not.
It never works in the network driver case (even in compatibility mode).
The setup program starts and after a while it stops and says it can't find any Intel network adapters.
To me this sound like its searching for a network card instead of the integrated network device.
I've downloaded and tried various things from Intels webpage. The chipset drivers (besides the integrated network) seem to be solved this way.
The non-Intel drivers (ASMedia, JMicron, Marvell and Realtek) almost works.
I think one of them destroys the installation but I haven't found out which one yet.
(I'm getting used to fixing the cfg.ini file by now ;) )
Anyway, after all this I wonder if anyone has any idea whats going on here?
I'd be very glad for any help on this
And do tell me if I've missed any important information
Regards

If you can work out which of the many drivers supplied in the download you want (Win 7 65-bit is a good start) try using device manager and tell it you have a driver disk and point it to the .inf file in the directory containing the driver.

Thanks for the answer Phil.
I've actually tried to do just that, I think.
Using drivers from ASUS as well as from Intel. (the Intel ones are newer and specifically for Win 7 x64 and Win 2008 R2 x64)
I've looked through the driver files and found one that is for Win 2008 R2 x64 and the 82579 (82579LM and 82579V are the names in the file). The INF-file is called e1c62x64.inf
This happens:
- In device manager the device is in the "Other Devices" branch and is called "Ethernet Controller". I choose Update Driver and browse to the folder with the INF-file. I can only pick a folder, not a specific file. Running the update generates the message:
"Windows was unable to install your Ethernet controller. Windows could not fine driver software for your device"
- Right-clicking on the INF-file and choosing Install generates the message:
"The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation"
So that's where I am right now.

All I can think of then is to buy a GB NIC that has support and disable your onboard controller in UEFI. They are really cheap now.

I hope it won't come to that but it might, eventually.
Thanks anyway

Hi Lasse,
Just unzip the latest ASUS LAN driver package to a temporary folder. There go to the folder "Driver", next the folder "PRO1000", next the folder "Winx64" (make sure it is the Winx64 folder and not the Win64 folder!) and from there just copy the complete "NDIS62" folder to a USB stick or similar.
On your WHS box use Device Manager and point to this folder when updating the driver.

Hi Luc,
I've just gone through the steps you describe, again, but it doesn't work.
I forgot to write that in my first post but did so in my answer to Phil earlier in the thread (nearly a day ago):
I've looked through the driver files and found one that is for Win 2008 R2 x64 and the 82579 (82579LM and 82579V are the names in the file). The INF-file is called e1c62x64.inf
This happens:
- In device manager the device is in the "Other Devices" branch and is called "Ethernet Controller". I choose Update Driver and browse to the folder with the INF-file. I can only pick a folder, not a specific file. Running the update generates the message:
"Windows was unable to install your Ethernet controller. Windows could not find driver software for your device"
- Right-clicking on the INF-file and choosing Install generates the message:
"The INF file you selected does not support this method of installation"
Its the same NDIS62 folder I found the e1c62x64.inf file in as the one you are writing about.
Thanks anyway for trying.

Why not try the Intel drivers?
Go to the Intel website and select a board in the Extreme series with a Z68 chipset. Go to Drivers and Downloads and get the PROWin7_64_v16.8.exe file. Use an extractor to extract the contents of the .exe file (I use Universal Extractor) and browse to the NDIS62 folder. Try again with the files in this folder.
On my WHS 2011 with an Intel board the following drivers are loaded:

Clever tip I thought, tried it and got the same bad results :(
In the end I think all these driver versions are very similar. Maybe even identical.
Well, one of my next things to do will be to find out if I have a faulty MB. Gonna try to install Win 7 coming weekend.
Till then I guess I have to take the GB NIC that was marked for an older PC on the LAN and put it in the WHS server
Thanks again for trying

Hi,
Have recently had very similar problems to those which you have described. In my case the drivers concerned relate to a Realtek product. In shear desperation I installed Windows 8 Preview, and presto, everything that should have been there was listed in Device Manager; and functioning correctly as well. I am now looking at how to copy the appropriate inf files to a USB and then pointing WHS to them during a reinstallation procedure. Having read your thread and link, I can't help but wonder if Realtek drivers haven't been modded to provent them being used on a "domestic" type mobo that is to be used in a server.
Did you manage to gather any inteligence about whether the Realtek device driver may have been the same as the Intel and are you aware if the same mods might apply? - By now I'm feeling desparate and a bit dangerous!

I have two Servers, both with Realtek NICs on standard motherboards, using PCIe GBE Family Controllers, which work without problem. I used W7 drivers.Phil P.S. If you find my comment helpful or if it answers your question, please mark it as such.
