Invalid Product Key RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Today I had to format my hard drive C: after being infected. I noticed that my genuine CD of XP is for SP1. So it was necessary for me to purchase a new CD for XP SP2 because my internet connection is rather very slow. I am almost sure that I entered the product key I have found on the COA of the new CD (Windows [r] XP Professional 1- 2CPU, OEM Software)

Please find below the diagnostic report I got by running Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool:

Would you please let me know in case I made a mistake in typing the product key (in the first two cells), if I can correct it without re-doing a reformat again?

Otherwise how could I be sure that the product I have purchased (not cheap) is genuine or not?

Thank you in advance for your care to provide me any information...

  • Hello AK_

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. The Windows XP Professional product key installed on this computer was not assigned by Microsoft. The key is counterfeit and was most likely generated by a key generator. The product key found on your computer has been detected on multiple computers. Product keys are only allowed to be used on one computer unless otherwise specified in the end user licensing agreement (EULA).  Curious did you purchase Windows with SP2 because your previous Windows only had SP1 included?  SP2 can be downloaded and would be included as a security update after you reformatted your system.  Below could be a possible scenario.

There are situations which can cause Windows and Office to become non-genuine. Let me give one example.  Customers have taken in their systems along with all the software received when purchasing their system. The customer picks up the system and viola' no problems whatsoever until they need to download an update or even a template used with MS Office. Suddenly their system is non-genuine. The customer's computer was not installed with their software but either a blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) or a keygen’d product key. Also the software could work for several weeks, months or even a year or more then suddenly becomes blocked.

This is why you may be seeing the "Software Counterfeiting" messages on your computer. You will need to uninstall (Place OS and/or Office Version Here) before any further complications occur from being non-genuine. As a customer there are several options available for you to get Genuine. For details on the ways to “Get Genuine”, see the web page that outlined your validation failure details or http://www.microsoft.com/genuine .  It will provide all of the possible steps which you can take. Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you, who have become victims, to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  . Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs.

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

    Thank you,

  • Ak,

Please visit the following website:  http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/. Next compare the windows you were sold against the information here. Curious where did you purchase this copy of Windows? Please provide me with the all the information. Also I would encourage you to file a piracy report which you will find the link in my previous post.

  • Dear Stephen,

First I like to thank you for your clear and prompt reply and sorry for my late response, you know, I was rather worried while restoring the OS (from XP SP1) and all my other programs, drivers and files on PC.

A few days ago, when the PC in question was infected, I was rather busy. So I let a friend re-install our old genuine XP SP1. Due to the rather low speed of our internet connection, it took him many hours to update SP1 then download SP2 and also its updates.

Unfortunaly, my friend did clean the driver C: only. Therefore the virus (Virtob or Virtub) was, from another HD, able to infect again the Windows exe files and the whole work had to be redone once again! Since time is gold, I got a bright idea which is to buy another XP genuine CD that includes SP2. You know what happened next.

As soon as I read your reply, I followed your advise and visited the retailer in his office situated in a good neighborhood. But to my big surprise, he refused to have a look on anything; diagnostic report or your reply. He has insisted that his copy is a genuine copy from Microsoft but for some reasons "MICROSOFT FAILS SOMETIMES IN RECOGNIZING ITS OWN COPIES"!.

I got scanned images for the XP CD, its COA, its retailer's simple invoice and visit card, just in case they might be needed later. His simple invoice is written on a printer with no info about his business. Truth be said, to me, the loss of money was much less important (just about USD 170.00) than the extra time we lost because of his non-genuine CD.

By the way and due to the sad events happening lately in the world, it becomes, here where I live (and was born... Aleppo city, Syria), no more easy for someone to purchase genuine USA products. For example, after the horrible tragedy of 9-11 and because of the new US regulations, NAV (Norton Anti-Virus) company didn't allow us to pay and renew our subscriptions. On the other hand, I believe that when a sanction is necessary, it shouldn't include the well-controlled products as for PCs. As a programmer, I know that a PC is, naturally and practically speaking, owned and controlled by the OS first then by the user Smile So when an ordinary user runs an OS as Windows XP (Vista later) on his PC or laptop, it means that he has already agreed to fully trust and even support the team behind it.

Finally, as the retailer is in my city (not in US), do you think Microsoft would be interested to get detailed information about my case? If yes, I will do my best to follow up your other advises.

    Thank you for your care.

    Hello AK,

Thank you for the reply. Yes I would follow-up and submit a piracy case. In turn this will help prevent others from becoming victims such as yourself. Paying money for a product @ a store and finding out the software isn't genuine isn't good. Also I agree with you the time involved to reformat a system. Please visit "How To Tell" located here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ . Please review the site and maybe this can help you with being able to tell genuine from non-genuine. The piracy site is located @:  http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/ .  Also review Security information here:  http://www.microsoft.com/security/default.mspx .

    Take care AK

  • Dear Stephen,

Thank you again for your kind reply.

I have just notice your recent threads on "Order Management System Server Notice" and "Server Maintenance Notice". As you know, I got the "Invalide Product Key" on Nov 12, 2007, so I wonder if it might be just a temporary positive false. Obviously I cannot check my key again since I run now XP by installing my XP SP1 CD and after being full updated online. Why I am telling you this, because I don't like accusing someone when I still have doubt that he might be innocent (American way Smile ) So if you are 100% sure that the key was not assigned by Microsoft then it is not in any way a positive false.

Sorry, if I sound a bit rude. I used to be very careful in a such situation and that is why I ask you to clear my doubt.

    Have a nice day.

    A.K.
