Home Server Console Software

Question
-
I just had the hard drive, motherboard, power supply, etc. fail on one of my computers. I have all new components installed and the computer is up and running again. By the way, I named my computer the same as the original one. This computer is called Bigblack.
When I open the Home Server Console Software on another computer on the network, I can see the backups from my original Bigblack computer, but they are grayed out. Is this because I don't have the Home Server Console Software loaded on my Bigblack computer?
My second problem is, I can't locate the disc containing the Home Server Console Software. Is this available as a free download, and if so where do I find it? I have just spent an hour looking on the HP web site without any luck. If I have to purchase this software again, does anyone know of a web address where I can purchase it? I could not find this software listed anywhere.
Thanks in advance for your help.

There is a network share named Software on your home server. It must have the WHS Connector software in it.
I believe you must have the Connector software installed on a computer, that you want to backup or restore, and have that computer added to the computer list in Computers & Backup section in WHS Console.- Proposed as answer by digimonx Monday, February 2, 2009 4:07 AM

Hi Lawrence,
looks normal for me (besides that I am not sure, if your description "new computer" is showing the old computer, which I would assume).
The grey is, because this computer is not online. But if you double click it in the console, you should be able to see (and access) the backups as far as they did not fall under the cleaning policy of your server. Maybe you should set one or more of the last complete backups to Keep.
You should delete this old computer in the console only, if you do not longer need any of it's backups. To get rid of warnings for this computer, right click on it and select "Turn Off Backups".

I have the replacement computer named the same as the one that burned up, but I don't have any software to add because I misplaced the CD that came with my WHS.
Do you know if this is a free download software or must it be purchased? Is the title of the software "Connect", or is it the WHS Console software? I don't remember installing any software called "Connect".

Hi,
if your server is up and running and already preconfigured, you should be able to access it in a web browser with a command like http://servername:55000.
This would open the internal website, from which you can install the most current connector software.
If the connector software is already installed on the PC in a matching version and the server is up to date, running discovery.exe from C:\Program Files\Windows Home Server should be also enough to reestablish the communication.
For accessing the backups the failed computer should not need to be active. What do you exactly mean with "grayed out"? While it is not a good idea to give a new installed computer the same name as one which has failed (unless it was a restore from a backup), there should still be a difference caused by the different system IDs. So the old computer will be shown as inactive, but the backups should be visible, once you open the computer in the console.

Thank you Olaf,
I took a screen capture to show what I was talking about when I said "grayed out".
You can see it here: http://www.blackcanyonsystems.com/4-3/screencapt.jpg
I appreciate your help.Lawrence

I am sorry my post was not helpful. Like I mentioned in my post, you could access the network share named Software on your home server at \\servername\software using Windows Explorer and install the WHS Connector from there, but I guess http://servername:55000 is more popular, and I am glad it worked for you just fine.Monday, February 2, 2009 1:42 PM

Hi,
the problem with the software share is, that it needs authentication. If a matching user account has not yet been created on the server, this method would be more difficult for the average home user, so the website is usually preferred.

I want to thank everyone for your help on this problem.
I am a photographer, not a computer person, so most of this is over my head. I have been able to set up a home network with 4 computers, 2 printers, the WHS, and a Yellow Machine (1TB NAS device that is no longer manufactured). I struggle to keep everything working.
