Question

ok remote access works... i can update my back end(which is one the server) from my local network computer in realtime. from my sons computer that is in another city, he can remote access the internal WHS website and log on. but he would like to only use the frontend(access 2007) and update the back end thats on my WHS. is this possiable? is there a file server addin like the ones for streaming music? just need some direction here please
thanks in advance for any advice

Remote Desktop to your server is possible, but unsupported. It's also not a great idea; you would have to your server to allow direct remote desktop access from the internet (not going through the secure RDP proxy that Windows Home Server supplies for access to client computers), and there are known attack vectors that could potentially be used against such a connection.
As for WebFolders4WHS, it's probably possible to map drives to the shares that you would be accessing, but I haven't tried. Performance-wise, your application would depend a great deal on the size of the Access database, on how data is accessed, and on the speed of your connection. But Access itself isn't designed to work well over a WAN, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not very good.
Instead of trying to use Access across your internet connection, have you considered just picking up an inexpensive desktop machine that you could leave sitting in a cornet somewhere, plugged in and turned on?

There is an add-in (WebFolders4WHS) that will expose your shares to remote computers, but it's likely that Access database performance over a WAN is going to be unacceptable. Your best bet is for your son to use Remote Desktop to a local computer (through the Remote Access web site) and run Access there.

thank you for the reply..... webfolders4whs answer .... performance would be that bad with todays high speed connection? didn't realize that... if I try the webfolder4whs idea is there anything special i would need to do for files to save directly to and look at the backend part of the Db from ms access because looking at the site it looks like it's still a manual drag and drop ...... looking for some thing that can help access look at the Db(pulling tables and such when needed) and have access save changes to it "auto like it was on a network drive"..... sorry if i'm asking too much here just thought because it's built on 2003 server it could be like a server with information being pulled and put on through a program without the download(whole Db) to upload(whole Db with changes)... am i clear as mud lmao!!!
pretty much like you said about doing a remote desktop to a networked computer and using access on it.
kinda defeating the purpose in a way because the networked computer has to be on always and accessabile to the network, it's a laptop btw... so there goes me taking it outta the house(then no remote in for me also)..... hmm this is a tough one to figure out
I thank you for anymore ideas that may come your way
would remote desktop into the server itself be an option... probably a worst one right? because that could break the WHS?

yeah that other machine method could be possiable but thinking about the mapping of a network drive
i have been looking at a few sites about mapping over the net to another machine. also vpn would tunnel to my server would it not?
just wish the remote access was more external harddrive (mapped drive) type than a upload /download system
i really do appreciate your thoughts and suggestions in this.... seems like your kinda the guru on this site lol
yeah didn't think remoting directly into the server would be a good idea.
anyone who makes WHS ADD-INS - a remote map network drive over the net - would be awesome for an addin
it could have many different applications for say programs that the files reside on the server but ppl are in and out of their homes can still start it up and change files on the fly from accross town.
i think i'll look deeper into webfolders4whs.... if you come up with another idea please let me know i am subscribing to this post
wanna say thanks again
