Previously Undocumented Validation Error RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I got to Microsoft Update to try and update my Windows, it requests me to complete "Genuine Windows Validation ", Support ID: 0x8DDD100F. When i attempt to do this it gives me the error: "Validation Incomplete: Unable to Perform Validation" with the error code (0x80080299). I haven't seen this error code or error message documented anywhere else. Also, I am able to complete the WGA standalone validation(the one that isnt bundled with microsoft update). In my head I would equate the two as being equal, which is what makes this so odd. Anyways, any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can you try the following fix to see if this helps to resolve your issue?

Open internet explorer, click "tools" then "manage add-ons" then find the Windows Genuine Advantage ActiveX control and put it as "ENABLE". If the setting is only allowed to be changed by administrators, then you must go to your C:\windows\system32 and DELETE the LegitCheckControl.dll file. Then go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en and revalidate. That will reload the DLL file correctly. Reboot your computer after this.

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • I have already tried this and there is no Windows Genuine Advantage ActiveX control  for me to enable.

  • Lithiium:

This fix may not completely apply to you since it looks as though you are using Mozilla as your browser.

    Try this,

open this link and click “Validate Windows” and see if this fixes your problem?

    www.microsoft.com/genuine

and if that doesn't work skip the editing part in the first fix I posted and go to the step having you delete the file.

Did you try the other link I gave you, and did it work?

  • I was taken to this link after clicking Validate Windows http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en

At this page an activeX control is supposed to load but never does.  I have also tried the "Alternate Method" thats takes you to this link http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/RunHTA.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=c57b1cfd-8de1-499e-b73c-5e0d670c4800&page=validate then clicked the "Validate Now" link http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/GenerateHTA.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=c57b1cfd-8de1-499e-b73c-5e0d670c4800&page=validate and clicked "Run" in the download box.  I get this Error.

    Validation Not Completed: ActiveX Error[0x80080206]
    Why did it not validate?

There are several reasons why validation may not have succeeded.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Tool requires the user account to have administrative privileges on the computer.

The Windows Genuine Advantage Tool requires access and is unable to communicate with the Microsoft validation servers. Please click here to learn more about troubleshooting your antivirus, antispyware, Internet Explorer and firewall settings.

I have tried the dianostic tool and after it diagnoses the problems it goes to a page to download the activeX control but again the control never loads.  Help?

Another question for you.  Are you logged on as an administrator when you are trying this?

    Please try the following:

Go to your C:\windows\system32 and DELETE the LegitCheckControl.dll file. Then go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/Validate.aspx?displaylang=en and revalidate. That will reload the DLL file correctly. Reboot your computer after this.

  • Still not working.  Getting no box to install the activeX control.
    Tuesday, June 6, 2006 5:22 PM
  • Lithiium:

What are your current ActiveX control settings at? (Open IE, then go to Internet Options, then internet security and click "custom")?

Can you temporarily set "ActiveX Controls (signed) to download and run as ALLOW" instead of prompt? Please move this back to prompt after this test though. :)

    Then try to revalidate.

  • Can you run through www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag with all pass results? I'm wondering if you're behing a Proxy/firewall that is blocking the ActiveX control from communicating to the validation servers to retrieve file version updates.

  • all pass but the last two.

Could websense be a cause of this?

    Tuesday, June 6, 2006 8:17 PM
  • Definitely :) (Or a firewall/proxy of some sort).
    Tuesday, June 6, 2006 8:39 PM
  • Alrighty, ill take the laptop home tonight and see if a non-firewalled/websensed connection solves the problem.  Thanks for the help.

  • Greg,

I'm running IE7 ... also do not have the GA ActiveX add-on.

I'm struggling with kb905474 errors.  Stop wuauserv; del %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and %windir%\System32\SoftwareDistribution; start wuaserv.

Now I get error [Error number: 0x80248014]

    MGADiag shows nothing unusual.

This is not moving in the right direction.

  • Phil,
This Microsoft forum is completely borked.  I got an email notification that you responded to my post ... but refresh and searches just don't make the posts show up on this thread.

I used IE7 to post ... IE7 to try to find my post / your response ... and also Firefox (which I'm posting from now).

Long story short ... my problem is resolved.  The critical part of the recovery was removing the two SoftwareDistribution directories, and then rebooting.

If I just tried to restart wuauserv, I got a crazy error from Update.

Also, there was no %windir%\kb905474.log file ... none when I was having the failures, and none when it successfully installed.

Suggestion: Update verifies downloaded fixes ... if it downloads them.
If they have already been downloaded, they are not verified.
I'm guessing I was dealing with an auto-update downloaded fix that was somehow corrupted.

Microsoft should verify the fix download before attempting the update.

I made no other changes to my machine ... none of the quirky plugins or registry hacks.  Just stopped the service, removed the directories, restarted the service (got an error), rebooted, and then updated successfully.

Hope this might help someone else.   MS Update has become extremely troublesome.  I _never_ let MS update automatically on machines I own, but my employer insists on doing it on their laptop ... and that's where the trouble started.

Thanks for the interest, Phil  (where-ever you are).

  • Took the laptop home last night, connected to a raw net connection. (no firewall, no proxy, nothing) Still got the same outcome as before, should i just reload this thing or you got some more ideas Phil?

  • Lithiium:

I'd suggest a reinstall, or contacting support ( http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?&c1=509&gprid=9860& ) as they will be able to further diagnose permissions issues (which seem to be the root of the problem). I'm sorry, but theres only so much one can do on a forum. :(

Please visit www.microsoft.com/genuine and revalidate, that should clear the issue.

Also, your copy of Office is not genuine. I suggest heading back to your retail point to remedy the issue.

    Hi All,

I know a very solid solution which can help us resolve these kinds of issues. From all the above information collected by the WGA Diagnostic Tool, I noticed that almost all the Product Key installed on the system were shown as Genuine. At this stage, we can refer to the following information and narrow down our issue.

Firstly, please temporarily disable the security programs for troubleshooting purposes only. The following programs can prevent the validation tool from running properly:

Norton Security programs, Panda Antivirus programs, Web Accelarator programs, Anti-Spyware programs, Pop-up Blockers.

Secondly, please download the update KB905474 from the following website link and save it to your Desktop: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498

After downloading the update, please double-click the downloaded file on your Desktop, and it will be launched automatically. Please follow the instructions to install it.

After we have finished the above steps, please restart the computer and try to validate Windows again. We also can enter the following site for checking.

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

On the above website, we can test some system settings and confirm that there are no other blocking issues with your validation or Internet Explorer settings blocking the validation process. Thank you for your attention. I hope we can resolve these issues soon. Good Luck!

  • Didn't solve the issues I have.  I even installed IE7 hoping to resolve . but get the exact errors as with IE6. ActiveX error.

I Validated Office fine, got the pop-up Window and an add - on installed in IE tools.

Have you tried the diagnostics website to see if you have activeX set correctly?

  • All results pass, but when it gets to Microsoft ActiveX controls loading it appears to hang and just says "checking".  All firewall and anti-spyware  programs have been removed in order to validate.

  • Oop! I wouldn't REMOVE the firewall, antivirus, and antispyware programs. I would only temporarily disable them.

Anyhow, can you check permission on  registry key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon\Settings”   ?

(Select the "Settings" key and right click Permissions. Make sure its on READ)

  • No luck on the registry permissions. Also, I have a reg entry of Notify Disabled under  the Notify entry. Should this be there?

  • I actually opened a case on this issue with MS and have been instructed to uninstall SP2  and then  reinstall while being logged into safe mode. Haven't been brave enough to try it yet.
