Drive Install RRS feed

  • Question

  • I want to pull the 500GB drive from my 470 to make a total of two drives for my 485.  How do I do that quickly and painlessly??

  • Use the console to remove the drive from the storage pool on the 470, then remove it physically and install it in the 485. Finally, use the console to add the drive to the storage pool on the new server.

If you're speaking of the system drive in the 470 (i.e. you're decommisioning it), remove it from that server and connect it to some other computer. On that other computer, format all partitions or use diskpart to clean the disk. Then install it in the new server and add it to the storage pool.

Never connect a Windows Home Server system drive to a functional Windows Home Server. It will cause problems, possibly severe enough to require a server recovery to correct.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • The process of cleaning a disk with diskpart is outlined in the FAQ How to reinitialize a disk, which is not accepted for the storage pool.
