CRM 2011 on-premises - how to implement external connector license? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone,

One of my customers would like to implement External Connector License to provide an access to external parities.

I would like to know the licensing cost and whether is it available on MSDN subscription?

Additionally, I would also like to know what is the procedure to use this particular license in a separate web portal? Does it allow to download documents saved as attachment in one of the custom entities?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks, Ankit Shah

  • Hi Ankit,

The Connector isn't an 'install' - and as such it isn't covered by MSDN (other than allowing you to develop a portal against a test/dev instance of Dynamics CRM).

The ECL is only applicable for On-Prem where you want to expose your CRM data to 'external users' who are  not either (i) your or your affiliates‟ employees, or (ii) your or your affiliates‟ onsite contractors or agents"

Provided the users of the portal fit this description of 'external users' - you can provide access to any information (including file attachments) that are stored within the Dynamics CRM database.

  • Hi Ankit,

That is my understanding too - I've not seen any specific guidance on which users you should use.

You don't need to implement IFD - so long as your portal can access the Dynamics CRM server through your firewall, you can use windows integrated authentication.

If you are Microsoft partner I will suggest you to go to Microsoft partner source to get licensing details.

    you could also check: http://crmpublish.blob.core.windows.net/docs/Pricing_Licensing_Guide.pdf

  • Hello Mahender,

Thank you for the quick response.

Yes, we are Microsoft Partner. Could you please share some screenshot or more details like from where we can access it On MSDN?

I have validated the PDF file that you specified above. However, I am unaware on one point that can we allow the external parties/contact(s) to access the attachment files with this license type?

    Thanks, Ankit Shah

  • Hi Ankit,

If you will connect to partner source (mbs.microsoft.com/partnersource) you will get "Pricing" link in left navigation from there you can get complete price sheet.

I think you can read attachment data using SDK and create some interface to download it, but I not sure on this so better to confirm from Microsoft On this.

  • Hello Scott,

Thank you for a detailed response.

Could you also explain how do I associate this license type with CRM? Do I need to create one separate user? If yes then what should be the License type and access mode for that user? How do I know that this user is using ECL?

Furthermore, do I need to use the credentials of this user in a separate web portal to fetch the CRM data?

    Thanks, Ankit Shah

  • Hi Ankit,

I am not aware of any specific guidance on this - but I usually create a separate user to associate with the portal. There isn't any need to associate the license with CRM.

  • Hello Scott,

    Thank you for the updates.

So, based on my understanding we can use any of the existing users to access the CRM on-premises data from an external portal. We just need to purchase the above trust license.

Secondly, we need to implement the IFD to access CRM 2011 on-premises via web portal. Right?

Could you please confirm my understanding?

    Thanks, Ankit Shah

  • Thank you Scott, thanks for the confirmation.

I am planning to use "CRM 2011 ASP.NET Membership Provider" for this.
